Update

* No Top Forty spot for Delbonis

* Kukushkin won’t make Top Fifty after retiring against Lu

* Tomic wins only one game in return to action

* Hewitt edges Haase to set up meeting with Nadal

Miami

Singles – First Round: D Istomin def. N Mahut 7-6(10-8) 7-6(7-2)

A modest upset, and one that costs Nicolas Mahut the chance to clinch his Top Forty ranking (although it still looks like the way to bet).

Singles – First Round: (Q) J Sock def. (WC) G Pella 6-3 6-4

This might not be quite enough to make Jack Sock Top Hundred, but he is very close.

Singles – First Round: (WC) R Harrison def. F Delbonis 6-2 6-4

It’s almost as if hitting the Top Fifty has put Federico Delbonis into a slump. He loses a good chance to hit the Top Forty.

Singles – First Round: E Roger-Vasselin def. I Sijsling 3-6 6-3 7-6(7-3)

One of the toughest first round matches, this costs Igor Sijsling his chance to make the Top Fifty.

Singles – First Round: Y Lu def. M Kukushkin 6-1 3-1, retired

Yen-Hsun Lu came in at #50, and he has defended his points from last year, but although he is still #50 in safe points, we’d guess he’ll need one more win to stay Top Fifty. Mikhail Kukushkin will probably be just below #55.

Singles – First Round: (Q) L Lacko def. K de Schepper 6-4 6-4

Kenny de Schepper will probably end up within one spot of the #66 ranking he came in with.

Singles – First Round: (Q) A Bedene def. (Q) J Wang 1-6 6-2 6-4

Although they’re both qualifiers, Aljaz Bedene is by far the more experienced of these two. The biggest surprise may be that this was so close.

Singles – First Round: D Gimeno-Traver def. (WC) K Khachanov 6-7(6-8) 6-1 6-1

Karen Khachanov still looks promising — but he’s only 17 years old, and 6″6′ tall. If his serve isn’t working, he’s in trouble. And he managed only five aces in this match.

Singles – First Round: J Nieminen def. B Tomic 6-0 6-1

By the looks of things, Bernard Tomic came back just a little too soon. Jarkko Nieminen needs one more win to defend his points and have any hope of staying Top Forty.

Singles – First Round: D Young def. C Berlocq 6-2 6-2

Carlos Berlocq is another guy who may not have been ready to play. The good news is, he wasn’t defending anything; the bad news is, the loss will leave him not much above #60.

Singles – First Round: S Robert def. (Q) A Bogomolov Jr. 7-5 6-4

Stephane Robert is now 4-4 this year. He might remember the last time he had an even record in a season, but we surely don’t….

Singles – First Round: G Garcia-Lopez def. B Klahn 1-6 6-1 6-4

Had Bradley Klahn managed to survive this, he would very possibly have made the Top Sixty. As it is, he’ll be at least a little short.

Singles – First Round: L Hewitt def. R Haase 3-6 6-3 6-3

This comes pretty close to being good news and bad news for Lleyton Hewitt. He defends his points, but he needs at least one more win to hit the Top Forty — and that win has to come against Rafael Nadal. He leaves Robin Haase somewhere between #47 and #50.

Singles – First Round: J Sousa def. P Carreno Busta 6-4 7-6(7-3)

Not many points yet for Joao Sousa, but enough that he finds himself on the brink of the Top Forty. He leaves Pablo Carreno Busta still around #65.

Singles – First Round: R Bautista Agut def. (Q) S Johnson 4-6 6-3 6-1

Because he earns qualifying points, Steven Johnson might hit the Top Hundred despite this loss; it’s going to be close. Roberto Bautista Agut is now just below #45.

Doubles – First Round: Butorac/Klaasen def. (4) Paes/Stepanek 6-3 7-6(9-7)

Add Paes/Stepanek to the list of players wishing Butorac/Klaasen were seeded already… fortunately, they weren’t defending all that much (second round points for Paes, nothing for Stepanek); we’d guess they will stay Top Ten

Doubles – First Round: (5) Marrero/Verdasco def. Begemann/F Mayer 7-6(7-4) 6-4
