Clinical Edberg sets up Enqvist Final; Targets ‘double win’ for himself and Federer

A few hours before Roger Federer swept past Kevin Anderson in straight sets in Indian Wells, his coach Stefan Edberg set up a final showdown against countryman Thomas Enqvist at the Kings of Tennis tournament in Stockholm. Edberg brushed aside the challenge of fellow swede Mats Wilander 6-1 6-1.

Edberg looked like a man half his age in front of the sell-out crowd at the Stockholm Waterfront Centre on Thursday, gliding across the court and putting away volleys with nonchalant ease.

With Federer into the semi-finals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, defending champion Edberg has his fingers crossed that they can both walk away with a title.

‘A double win is without doubt the aim for both me and Roger this week, it would be fantastic!’ he said.

‘Roger had better be following my matches here! His matches are in the middle of the night for me so I’ll be up tonight streaming his match against Anderson on my computer.’

Despite facing a man eight years his junior in today’s final, Edberg is confident he stands a chance against Enqvist, who celebrated his 40th birthday today.

‘I really am happy to be in the final,’ he said.’ I think I played Thomas only at the end of my career and my record against him is not so good. He played so well last night against Moya so I know it will be tough but I know that I’m in good shape and I have to give myself a chance against him.’

And on Federer’s chances of success in Indian Wells this week, Edberg was equally positive.

‘I’m just so happy that he’s healthy,’ he said. ‘It’s great for him to get these wins in both singles and doubles, that’s really building his confidence. I have no doubt he still has some juice left in him and he can still win tournaments.’

Enqvist will be hoping to complete a hat-trick of wins against former World Number Ones when he faces Edberg on Friday, having already seen off challenges from Marcelo Rios and Carlos Moya in Stockholm this week.

In Thursday’s second match Moya secured qualification for the third place play-off match against Leconte after overcoming Chilean Rios 6-4, 6-3.
