Acapulco

Sam Querrey snapped a five-match loss streak dating to the Australian Open last month as he advanced into the second round on the new hardcourts of Mexico, beating local Tigre Hank 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3. France’s Jeremy Chardy started with a defeat of Australian Matthew Ebden 7-5, 6-0 while Dudi Sela stopped Alejandro Falla of Colombia 6-1, 6-4 in a quiet start to the joint ATP-WTA tournament which switched from clay this year to try and attract a stronger field in the run-up to the cement Masters 1000 tournament starting next week at Indian Wells.

DUBAI

Roger Federer began with a 6-1, 6-4 first-round rout of Benjamin Becker which took just 62 minutes. The fourth seed won his 38th match at the emirate where he maintains a training base. He improved to 4-0 over Becker, the ATP No. 93, in a win which included a crowd-pleasing between-the-legs return. “In the first round, you don’t know what to expect,” Federer said. “I hit some good shots and played the attacking-style tennis that I wanted to play.”

Federer will await a second-round opponent from Czech Radek Stepanek and American Michael Russell. The Swiss maintained a near-perfect early record at the event after losing his only first-round Dubai match six years ago against Andy Murray.

Federer dominated the opening set with 11 winners but needed three match point to warp up victory., saving a break point in the final game. Russian eighth seed Dmitry Tursunov sent over eight aces in a 7-5, 6-1 defeat of Slovak qualifier Lukas Lacko. Tursunov, ranked 28th, is playing the desert event for the fourth time, with a 2013 quarter-final his best career showing. Tursunov advanced in 69 minutes, saving all four break points that he faced from the qualifier.

Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut beat Romanian qualifier Adrian Ungur 6-1, 6-3 and will face the winner of Tuesday’s Djokovic-Denis Istomin match. Italy’s Andreas Seppi reached the second round with a comeback win against German Florian Mayer 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. The victory ended a four-match losing streak for Seppi, who won only his second match of the season. His previous victory came in the Australian Open first round.

Sao Paolo

Two seeds stumbled on opening day as Brazil’s Joao Souza put out tournament No. 5 Robin Haase of the Netherlands 7-5 6-4. Argentine Guido Pella did the same to compatriot Leonardo Mayer, beating the No. 7 with a 7-6(4), 6-7(3), 7-6(4) scoreline. Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos advanced over (Argentina) beat Pablo Cuevas in an all-South American first-round clash 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-3.
