Serbian Novak Djokovic completed a dominant end to his 2013 campaign and successfully defending his Barclays ATP World Tour Finals crown with a stellar 6-3, 6-4 win over world #1 Rafael Nadal. The two met at the U.S. Open in September where Rafa won in four sets, but since then, Djokovic has now dominated the Spaniard twice in their follow up meetings (Beijing, London). The indoor conditions suited Djokovic’s style more than Nadal’s as the Spaniard’s heavy topspin was absorbed greatly by the court.
Djokovic’s backhand down the line and return of serve did loads of damage to the defensive Nadal. Whenever he had a chance, the Serb was on the baseline directing the rally. The Spaniard was constantly sent reeling backward by the flatter strokes of Djokovic and was unable to consistently use his cross court forehand pattern to his advantage. Djokovic was also able to match Nadal’s speed around the court which caused uncharacteristic unforced errors from Rafa’s racquet.
