Novak Djokovic took one step closer to finishing the year undefeated and defending his Barclays title as he dispatched Swiss hopeful Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals on Sunday night. Djokovic proved to be the dominant player throughout the match by showcasing his incredible defensive and returning skills. Wawrinka was unable to find any weaknesses in the Djokovic arsenal and committed a total of 34 unforced errors to Djokovic’s 14.

Wawrinka should have taken a page out of Nadal’s playbook when confronting Djokovic by eliminating angles during baseline rallies. Time and again Djokovic was stretched wide and able to come up with power and depth. However when balls were struck with relatively no angle, Novak’s timing and committal to his shots was slightly off. The depth of Djokovic’s shots caused the biggest problems for Stan as he couldn’t generate any short balls to attack. Djokovic would then effectively turn the tide with his remarkable backhand up the line and begin punishing Stan side to side thereafter.

The Barclays final will indeed feature the two best players in the world of 2013. Novak has won every single match since his loss to Nadal at the U.S. Open, including their first rematch in the finals of Beijing. With both players undefeated this week, the level of tennis in the final is bound to be electric. The stage is set, the atmosphere in the 02 is ready, and the two players are gearing up for one hell of a final match in 2013.
