Roger Federer’s homecoming got off to a sweet start both on and off the court. The Swiss No. 1, who began his quest for a sixth title in his hometown of Basel this week, recently attended an event for his foundation at the Lindt chocolate headquarters in Kilchberg, Switzerland.

Federer made chocolate creations with a group of schoolchildren in an event supported by the Roger Federer Foundation, in partnership with Winter Aid Switzerland. Established in 2003, the foundation empowers underprivileged children in Africa to reach their full potential by developing educational services and a sustainable support structure. In 2011, the Roger Federer Foundation joined Lindt to support a special program by Winter Aid Switzerland that helps children in Switzerland, utilising a total of 400,000 Swiss francs over a period of five years.

“As a father of two little children, I experience on a day-to-day basis how important it is to support them in all possible ways,” said Federer in a statement on his website. “That is why I take particular personal interest in getting involved with underprivileged children here in Switzerland, too. It was great fun spending an exciting day at the Lindt Chocolateria together with the kids we support through the program of Winter Aid.”

Federer advanced to the quarter-finals of the Swiss Indoors Basel with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Denis Istomin on Wednesday, strengthening his bid to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. Federer’s qualifying prospects received a significant boost when fellow Emirates ATP Race to London contenders Stanislas Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet fell in the first round. A potential rematch of last year’s final between the Swiss and Juan Martin del Potro looms on the horizon.
