Serena Williams Will Play Till She Is 40?

Serena Williams has every intention of trying to maintain her current run of form, with the 32-year-old boldly hinting that she even has the chance to play on to age 40.

While not making the claim in so many words, the winner of ten titles this season left little doubt that she is willing to try and break the age barrier in the style of 43-year-old Japanese Kimiko Date-Krumm. “Who knows? I might be here. I have learned from ten years ago. I can never say.”

But the more immediately concerns of the 17-time grand slam event winner focused on this week’s WTA Championships. She brings a 73-4 season record into her opening match with German Angelique Kerber and has gone undefeated since Wimbledon. “I never thought I would have one of my best years this year, and now there is an opportunity to do even better, “she said. “I’m interested for next year to take my game to a new level, which I think I can do.

“Even if I got to 23 Grand Slams, it would be very hard, with so many wonderful players, especially now. There are so many great new players coming up. Everyone is so young, everyone is so hungry, everyone wants to be the next No. 1. It’s going to be even tough for me to get to 18. Obviously that’s my goal, but I take it one match at a time.”
