The USTA has announced that former US Open and Wimbledon singles champion Stan Smith has been honored with the 2013 United States Tennis Association’s President’s Award. The announcement was made at the USTA Semi-Annual meeting last week at the Grand Hyatt in New York City.

Smith is originally from Pasadena, Calif., and starred collegiately for the University of Southern California where he won both NCAA singles and doubles titles. A former No. 1 player in the world, Smith won the US Open singles championship in 1971 and Wimbledon in 1972. Pairing with his former college partner, Smith and Bob Lutz formed one of the all-time great doubles team and won four US Open doubles titles.

Smith was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987. He currently owns and operates the Smith Stearns Tennis Academy on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.

“Stan Smith was one of my tennis idols growing up and has always been an advocate for the sport and major contributor in our efforts to grow the game,” said USTA Chairman, CEO and President David Haggerty. “Stan was not only one of the greatest players of his generation, but has always had an incredible passion, dedication and commitment to the sport of tennis and it is my privilege to honor him this year with the President’s Award.”

The President’s Award honors an individual who has given unusual and extraordinary service to the sport of tennis in the public’s interest.
