U. S. Open

Singles – Second Round: (1) N Djokovic def. B Becker 7-6(7-2) 6-2 6-2

Novak Djokovic still hasn’t clinched the #1 ranking, but he’s clearly doing his best.

Singles – Second Round: (3) A Murray def. L Mayer 7-5 6-1 3-6 6-1

A rather scary score, considering that Andy Murray has only a few hundred point lead on David Ferrer in the contest for #3.

Singles – Second Round: (5) T Berdych def. D Kudla 7-6(7-3) 7-6(7-3) 6-3

Tomas Berdych moves back ahead of Roger Federer in the contest for #5, but it’s still razor-close; whichever lasts longest gets it.

Singles – Second Round: L Hewitt def. (6) J del Potro 6-4 5-7 3-6 7-6(7-2) 6-1

Even Lleyton Hewitt admitted, after this match, that he didn’t know how much longer he’ll be able to play. Probably a sane player would have given up by now. But that same dogged stubbornness that keeps Hewitt in the sport served him well here. This will keep him above #70 — and takes Juan Martin del Potro our of the contest for the #5 ranking.

Singles – Second Round: (9) S Wawrinka def. I Karlovic 7-5 7-6(10-8) 6-4

Stanislas Wawrinka very slightly pads his lead over Milos Raonic in the contest for the #10 ranking, but that likely won’t be settled for days.

Singles – Second Round: (12) T Haas def. Y Lu 6-3 6-4 7-6(7-3)

These are all free points for Tommy Haas, but he hasn’t moved yet; one more win would take him past Kei Nishikori.

Singles – Second Round: M Baghdatis def. (17) K Anderson 6-2 6-2 6-2

That’s the best result for Marcos Baghdatis in recent months — which makes it fitting that it will return him to the Top Fifty. Kevin Anderson will stay right around #20.

Singles – Second Round: (20) A Seppi def. S Devvarman 7-6(10-8) 6-4 7-5

One more win might suffice to put Andreas Seppi in the Top Twenty.

Singles – Second Round: (21) M Youzhny def. A Dolgopolov 7-5 6-1 6-3

Alexandr Dolgopolov falls to no better than #40; we’d guess he’ll be a spot or two lower.

Singles – Second Round: (31) J Benneteau def. J Chardy 6-4 6-3 6-4

Jeremy Chardy made the third round last year; he’ll be falling to around #40.

Singles – Second Round: E Donskoy def. P Gojowczyk 6-3 6-4 3-6 4-6 6-3

This is impressive enough that we’re going to keep Peter Gojowczyk on our watch list. Too bad that also means we need to keep him on our to-be-able-to-type-his-name list….

Singles – Second Round: D Istomin def. T Kamke 6-4 6-2 6-2

Denis Istomin is back up to about #55.

Singles – Second Round: F Mayer def. D Young 7-5 6-3 6-4

Florian Mayer is now back up to about #44, but his draw has run out of easy names….

Singles – Second Round: J Sousa def. J Nieminen 1-6 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-4

A sign that Jarkko Nieminen may be getting old? He won’t rise above his current #41.

Singles – Second Round: M Granollers def. R Ram 3-6 4-6 6-2 6-3 7-5

Another surprise by Rajeev Ram — but not surprise enough, obviously. Marcel Granollers is now only about a hundred points away from a return to the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: T Smyczek def. A Bogomolov Jr. 3-6 7-6(8-6) 2-6 6-4 6-4

This is pretty definitely the best singles result of Tim Smyczek’s career. He is cementing his Top Hundred ranking — and he’ll face a weary Marcel Granollers next.

Doubles – First Round: (6) Bopanna/Roger-Vasselin def. Klahn/Querrey 6-2 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Bautista Agut/Gimeno-Traver def. Mergea/Rosol 4-6 7-5 6-0

Doubles – First Round: Kas/Marach def. Andujar/Garcia-Lopez 6-2 6-4

Doubles – Second Round: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Butorac/Nielsen 6-3 6-2

Four matches to go to the Grand Slam.

Doubles – Second Round: (10) Dodig/Melo def. Begemann/Emrich 7-6(7-5) 6-3

Marcelo Melo defends his points; he’ll have a genuine shot at the Top Ten if he can win any more.

Doubles – Second Round: (12) Fleming/Marray def. Harrison/Lindstedt 6-3 6-4

More troubles for Robert Lindstedt, who loses Round of Sixteen points and will be around #20.

Doubles – Second Round: Llodra/Mahut def. (14) Fognini/Ramos 6-3 6-4

Hard to believe Llodra/Mahut weren’t the seeds here. Of course, they demonstrated that they probably should have been….

Doubles – Second Round: (16) Huey/Inglot def. Bracciali/Dlouhy 6-3 6-3

Doubles – Second Round: J Murray/Peers def. F Lopez/Sa 6-7(7-9) 7-5 7-5

Doubles – Second Round: Nestor/Pospisil def. Montanes/Robredo 4-6 6-2 6-1

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Barty/Peers def. (1) Groenefeld/Peya 4-6 6-3 11-9

Groenefeld/Peya were not #1 under Mixed rankings — they weren’t even seeded — so this is a clear triumph for Mixed rankings.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (2) Srebotink/Zimonjic def. Black/Qureshi 6-3 6-1

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Spears/S Gonzalez def. (3) Goerges/Bopanna 6-7(1-7) 6-2 10-6

Goerges/Bopanna would have been unseeded under mixed rankings, and only one place ahead of Spears/Gonzalez, so no big surprise here.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (5) Medina Garrigues/Soares def. Oudin/Krajicek 7-5 6-2

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (7) Hlavackova/Mirnyi def. Christian/Novikov 6-1 6-1

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (8) Huber/Melo def. Mirza/Tecau 4-6 7-6(12-10) 10-4

This at least goes against Mixed rankings, which would have made Mirza/Tecau the #4 seeds.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Hradecka/Cermak def. Llagostera Vives/Fleming 6-2 7-5

Mixed rankings make Hradecka/Cermak the top team in the world. No reason to argue with that so far….

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Kops-Jones/Huey def. Duval/Young 2-6 6-4 10-6

Mixed Doubles – First Round: H Chan/Emmrich def. Stephens/Sock 6-4 6-4

Doubles experience beats singles skill….

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Y Chan/Lindstedt def. Hingis/Bhupathi 7-6(7-5) 7-6(7-5)

All we can say is, Martina Hingis has a lot to think about in this second comeback of hers. She and Bhupathi seemed once to be the best Mixed team in the world!

Amazingly, they had to turn away spectators from the court for this match. In Mixed! But Hingis’s serve was not working at all well; she would later say that her calf hurt. Still, it was a very depressing day for her.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Cornet/Roger-Vasselin def. Santamaria/Jenkins 6-4 6-1

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Husarova/Polasek def. Schnack/Roberson 6-4 7-6(7-3)

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Mladenovic/Nestor def. Dellacqua/Lipsky 6-3 6-3
