Querrey Has A Warning For Tournament Directors Everywhere
Sam Querrey has a good line in dry humor and even after saving four match points to survive in Washington DC’s Citi Open, he had words of warning for tournament director Jeff Newman and others.
Querrey, seeded no.6 in the Washington event, was playing on hard courts for the first time since April, but had to battle from the very brink of defeat to win his first round match 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 against Uzbekistan’s Dennis Istomin.
But then the world no.22 from California, a semi-finalist at Washington last year, pointed out the perils of having him as tournament champion after several other events where he had lifted the trophy, had folded.
Last year saw the final playing of the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles after a history dating back 86 years and Querrey was the last ever champion. In 2008 he also won the final Tennis Channel Open in Las Vegas and in 2010 he won the Serbia Open in Belgrade that fell off the ATP World Tour this year.
“You don’t want me winning your tournament,” joked Querrey as he recovered from his lengthy win over Istomin and got ready for another tough encounter against 11th seeded Grigor Dimitrov.
