Carlsbad

2011 US Open winner Samantha Stosur began redeeming her hardcourt tennis after an early exit a week ago, winning into the second round as a wild card over American Varvara Lepchenko 7-5, 6-1. The No. 13 who left the top 10 after a French Open loss has managed only three quarter-finals so far in 2013.

Stosur was joined in the second round at La Costa by 2010 French Open winner Francesca Schiavone. who needed three hours to hold off Italian compatriot Flavia Pennetta 7-6(4), 6-7(6), 6-4. Schiavone first played the tournament in 2002 and last appeared in 2005. The Italians totaled 17 double-faults, with Schiavone now standing 6-2 in the series.

France’s Virginie Razzano spoiled the post-injury return for 2010 winner Svetlana Kuznetsova after injury as she beat the two-time grand slam champion Russian who has not played since Roland Garros in early June 6-2, 6-4. The week marks the return of Victoria Azarenka after the world No. 3 quit before her Wimbledon second-round match after hurting her knee in a fall in her opening win.

“I’m excited to be back on the tour and glad to be here,” said the LA-based Belarus player whose only appearance at the tournament came in 2007 when she won a match. “I had to go through a lot of rehab but it was a good test for me. I had a bad fall. But I think it made me stronger to go through it. Rehab really tests you.” Azarenka takes the top seeding ahead of Agnieszka Radwanska, Petra Kvitova and Italian Roberta Vinci.

Washington DC

Slovak seventh seed Magdalena Rybarikova dealt a defeat to slumping Christina McHale 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, with the American losing seven of her last nine matches. Former US Open finalist Melanie Oudin got a US win as she beat Australian Anastasia Rodionova (Australia) 7-5 6-3.

But US second seed Sloane Stephens, an Australian open semi-finalist who has never come close to duplicating that kind of form, was drummed out 7-5, 6-3, by Russian Olga Puchkova. German Andrea Petkovic took an opening victory over Jessica Pegula of the US 6-2, 7-5 and Slovak Jana Cepelova defeated Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands 6-4, 0-6, 6-3.
