PRO TOUR NEWS – WOMEN

****** PUBLICATION NOTE ******

We have a personal deadline, and Stanford isn’t cooperating. We can’t wait anymore. The Stanford final doesn’t actually make a difference anyway, at least in the rankings.

****** EXECUTIVE SUMMARY ******

* Svitolina wins first full WTA title

****** TODAY’S WOMEN’S NEWS ******

Stanford

Late Saturday:

Singles – Semifinal: (1) Agnieszka Radwanska def. (4) Jamie Hampton 6-3 6-2

It appears Jamie Hampton will have to settle for #24. For now. But she remains on track for a year-end Top Twenty spot.

Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Kops-Jones/Spears def. (3) Hantuchova/Raymond 7-5 6-2

American hardcourts really do seem to bring Kops-Jones/Spears to life. It will be interesting to see just how man points they can stack up in the next six weeks or so.

Sunday

Singles – Final: (Watch for score later — they’re on serve in the third set)

They fought amazingly hard, considering that this match made no difference at all. Agnieszka Radwanska was going to be #4 win or lose, and Dominika Cibulkova #21. And, frankly, that’s all we can think to say after a day as long as this one, except that Cibukova was going for her first title of the year, and Radwanska for her first since before the Australian Open.

Baku

Singles – Final: (7) Elina Svitolina def. Shahar Peer 6-4 6-4

For once, strong form topped experience. Shahar Peer has a history of winning WTA titles; Elina Svitolina had nothing bigger than the Pune slightly-more-than-a-Challenger. But Svitolina came in ranked seventy-odd places higher, with a semifinal last week, and playing very well. She wins her first-ever true WTA title. And leaves Peer still below #100.

Svitolina, on the other hand, continues to rocket upward. #71 coming in, she rises to right around #50. And we wouldn’t bet on her being done.

Doubles – Final: (2) Buryachok/Kalashnikova def. Daniilidou/Krunic 4-6 7-6(7-3) 10-4

It isn’t just Elina Svitolina celebrating her first title. Everybody in the winner’s circle was celebrating something. Oksana Kalashnikova also picks up her first WTA title. And Irina Buryachok, who is effectively finished as a singles player, improved her standing as a doubles specialist by earning her first-ever doubles title defense. She had only one previous WTA title — here, last year, with Solovieva. A big day all around.
