Roland Garros

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) Maria Sharapova def. (18) Jelena Jankovic 0-6 6-4 6-3

Maria Sharapova insists that she was in the first set. Still, she made 20 unforced errors in that set — but managed to clean things up after that. She has now won a dozen straight matches on the clay here. But she still needs two more if she is to keep the #2 ranking. Jelena Jankovic leaves here having gotten her ranking up to #16 — and likely to go higher, if she can continue the results she has had in the last few months; she really does seem to have broken out of her funk.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) Victoria Azarenka def. (12) Maria Kirilenko 7-6(7-3) 6-2

If ever Maria Kirilenko were to get Victoria Azarenka, clay would be the surface. But apparently not even clay was sufficient. It probably didn’t help that she needed help from the trainer. Kirilenko can still console herself with a Top Ten ranking

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Errani/Vinci def. Lepchenko/S Zheng 7-5 6-1

Errani and Vinci have already clinched the top doubles rankings, but it looks as if they would like another title as well….

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Hlavackova/Hradecka def. Black/Erakovic 2-6 7-6(7-3) 6-4

This moved Andrea Hlavackova ahead of Nadia Petrova in the contest for #3 — but Petrova hadn’t played yet…

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Petrova/Srebotnik def. (11) Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova 6-3 6-3

…and this puts Petrova back in the lead.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Makarova/Vesnina def. (10) Mladenovic/Voskoboeva 6-4 6-1

Makarova/Vesnina are finally starting to add points. Vesnina will probably rise from #9 to #8; Makarova hasn’t moved yet, but could with another win. It appears Kristina Mladenovic will edge into the Top Fifteen.

It’s interesting to note that the four top teams made the semifinal. Not only that, the eight players in the semifinal are assured of being the Top Eight after this week; we currently show the Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) ERRANI ………….9130*

1..(1) VINCI …………. 9130*

3..(3) PETROVA ……….. 7475*

4..(4) HLAVACKOVA ………7340*

5..(5) HRADECKA ………..6786*

6..(6) SREBOTNIK ……… 6375*

7..(7) MAKAROVA ………..5900*

8..(9) VESNINA ……….. 5552*

9.(11) Raymond ……….. 4775

10.(12) HUBER …………. 4425

Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: (8) Huber/Melo def. (4) Raymond/Soares 6-4 6-4

This must be pretty frustrating for Lisa Raymond. As it turns out, she came here only to play mixed — she didn’t even get a spot in the regular doubles draw. And now she’s out to her ex-partner. (This was a truly odd match, because Melo/Soares are also ex-teammates.) It doesn’t tell us much about the Mixed rankings, though; Mixed would have seeded the two teams in almost exactly the same relationship (Raymond/Soares #3, Huber/Melo #7).

Mixed Doubles – Semifinal: (5) Mladenovic/Nestor def. Black/Qureshi 7-5 6-4

Kristina Mladenovic has been making tremendous progress in women’s doubles lately. Clearly she can do it in mixed as well. And teaming up with a veteran like Daniel Nestor is almost like picking up another coach….

Mixed Doubles – Semifinal: Hradecka/Cermak def. (8) Huber/Melo 3-6 6-2 10-3

The main reason for this may just be that Huber/Melo had to play two matches in one day, but it’s interesting to note that Hradecka/Cermak would have been the #4 seeds under Mixed rankings, above Huber/Melo.

Roland Garros Rankings Update: Women

It’s boring at the top. Serena Williams has long since clinched the #1 singles ranking, and while Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci faced the possibility of losing the top doubles rankings, that’s now gone; the Italians will remain #1.

#2 is in the air, but it’s not far from landing. The only way Maria Sharapova can keep the #2 spot is by defending her title at Roland Garros. Otherwise, Victoria Azarenka will be #2, with Sharapova #3. Agnieszka Radwanska will be #4 — although by only a few dozen points if Sara Errani wins Roland Garros. Errani is assured of the #5 spot. Rounding out the Top Ten are Li Na, Angelique Kerber, Petra Kvitova, Caroline Wozniacki, and Maria Kirilenko, in that order. Kirilenko takes the place of Samantha Stosur, who is falling to the bottom of the Top Fifteen.

Interestingly, we have no new Top Fifteen players; Jelena Jankovic fell just short. It appears Kirsten Flipkens has joined the Top Twenty, replacing Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. New to the Top 25 are Alize Cornet and Sorana Cirstea, replacing Varvara Lepchenko and Klara Zakopalova. Zakopalova is down all the way to #33.

Also out of the Top Thirty are Julia Goerges and Kaia Kanepi. Kanepi, in fact, is out of the Top Forty, as is Urszula Radwanska. Out of the Top Fifty are Heather Watson and Yaroslava Shvedova, their spots taken by Jamie Hampton (whom we show at #41) and Magdalena Rybarikova (#47).

Lisa Raymond and Liezel Huber appear set to make the doubles Top Ten, replacing Nuria Llagostera Vives and Maria Kirilenko.
