Roland Garros

Singles – Second Round: (3) Victoria Azarenka def. Annika Beck 6-4 6-3
Annika Beck is promising, but evidently not promising enough. She will be around #55.

Singles – Second Round: Bethanie Mattek-Sands def. (6) Li Na 5-7 6-3 6-2
There was rain in this match, and Li Na never seemed to get her game back after the delay — and, of course, Bethanie Mattek-Sands is great at dealing with off-form opponents. Li might still rise to #5, but she won’t make it to #4, and she might still end up lower. Mattek-Sands is now just below #60.

Singles – Second Round: (7) Petra Kvitova def. Peng Shuai 6-4 6-3
Given how bad Petra Kvitova looked in the first round, this should have been Peng Shuai’s big chance to really gain ground. Instead, she gave Kvitova some useful practice. There is a possibility this will cost Peng her Top 25 spot.

Singles – Second Round: (9) Samantha Stosur def. Kristina Mladenovic 6-4 6-3
The first of several rain delays took place in this match, but it didn’t interfere much with Samantha Stosur. She is still only #13 in safe points, however. Kristina Mladenovic should rise to just above #40.

Singles – Second Round: Marina Erakovic def. (16) Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 2-6 6-4
A truly astounding result on this surface; clay used to be Dominika Cibulkova’s best surface! She was a quarterfinalist last year, and will fall to no better than #18.

Singles – Second Round: (17) Sloane Stephens def. Vania King 6-1 6-3
Sloane Stephens needs one more win to defend her points. She leaves Vania King — who made the second round last year also — still below #100.

Singles – Second Round: (18) Jelena Jankovic def. Garbine Muguruza 6-3 6-0
Jelena Jankovic was so efficient that she actually managed to beat the rain delay. It will be hard for her to rise above #16 this week, but it looks as if it could happen in the not-too-distant future if she can keep up this form.

Singles – Second Round: Paula Ormaechea def. (27) Yaroslava Shvedova 6-4 7-6(8-6)
Based on recent form, this was a disaster waiting to happen for Yaroslava Shvedova, but the fact that we knew it was coming doesn’t make it less disastrous. She was defending quarterfinalist points; this will cause her to fall several spots below the Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: (31) Alize Cornet def. Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-1 6-3
It’s still not mathematically guaranteed, but it really looks as if Alize Cornet will be making the Top 25 as a result of this.

Singles – Second Round: Jamie Hampton def. Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 7-5 6-2
No question at all, now: Jamie Hampton is Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: Zheng Jie def. Melanie Oudin 6-3 6-1
Melanie Oudin was defending second round points, so she will remain probably slightly above #80. Zheng Jie may rise to slightly above #40.

Doubles – First Round: (2) Hlavackova/Hradecka def. Lim/Rezai 6-0 6-3
The way things have been going for Hlavackova/Hradecka lately, this was by no means an open-and-shut match. They may well need more to stay Top Five, too.

Doubles – First Round: Begu/Rybarikova def. (6) Kops-Jones/Spears 1-6 6-2 7-5
Kops-Jones/Spears have had some decent clay wins, but they can’t seem to do it consistently. At least they weren’t defending anything; they’ll stay around #15.

Doubles – First Round: Bratchikova/Tanasugarn def. Cepelova/Ka. Pliskova 6-4 7-5

Doubles – First Round: Castano/Marosi def. Voracova/Zakopalova 1-6 6-3 7-6(7-5)

Doubles – First Round: Hurarova/Lisicki def. Hrdinova/Jovanovski 4-6 6-1 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Kalashnikova/Rosolska def. Buryachok/Watson 3-6 6-4 7-5

Doubles – First Round: Lepchenko/S Zheng def. Arvidsson/Larsson 6-1 7-6(7-3)

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Petrova/Cabal def. Minella/Peya 6-4 7-5
Interesting that Nadia Petrova — who is a very strong doubles player; she has a chance at #1 this week — didn’t pick out a stronger Mixed partner. But things are working for her so far.
