Roland Garros

Singles – First Round: (3) Victoria Azarenka def. Elena Vesnina 6-1 6-4

It took place a day later than planned, but Victoria Azarenka finally made the second round. Elena Vesnina wasn’t defending anything, so she will stay Top Forty, but this costs her her Top Thirty chance.

Singles – First Round: (7) Petra Kvitova def. Aravane Rezai 6-3 4-6 6-2

Petra Kvitova once again played below her abilities, but she was lucky to face an equally messed-up opponent. Still, Kvitova will need more than this to keep the #7 ranking.

Singles – First Round: (12) Maria Kirilenko def. Nina Bratchikova 6-0 6-1

If you check the Estimated Rankings, you’ll see Maria Kirilenko at #10 in safe points. She needs more to clinch a Top Ten spot, but she definitely has her chances.

Singles – First Round: Kaia Kanepi def. (23) Klara Zakopalova 7-6(7-3) 6-2

Truly an awful first round draw for Klara Zakopalova; these two should both have been seeds. Especially on clay. Zakopalova will lose her Top Thirty spot; Kaia Kanepi still has points to defend, but this will keep her Top Fifty.

Singles – First Round: Jamie Hampton def. (25) Lucie Safarova 7-6(7-5) 3-6 9-7

On clay this happens? Admittedly, when you get past 6-6 in the third, anything can happen — but it shouldn’t have gotten to that point! Jamie Hampton — who seems to be turning into a pretty good clay player — will be hitting the Top Fifty; Lucie Safarova, who made the second round last year, will be around — very possibly slightly below — #30.

Singles – First Round: Anna Karolina Schmiedlova def. Yanina Wickmayer 7-6(7-5) 2-6 6-2

There was more than a one hundred place ranking gap between these two, but right now, absolutely nothing is working for Yanina Wickmayer. Fortunately, she wasn’t defending anything, so she should stay around #40.

Singles – First Round: Annika Beck def. Sandra Zahlavova 6-2 6-1

Annika Beck will rise above #60.

Singles – First Round: Ashleigh Barty def. Lucie Hradecka 7-5 2-6 6-1

Lucie Hradecka did well enough last week to make it back into the Top Hundred, but maybe she is still tired as a result.

Singles – First Round: Peng Shuai def. Camila Giorgi 6-4 6-2

Peng Shuai needs one more win to defend her points, but she faces Kvitova next, which looks like a big opportunity.

Singles – First Round: Stefanie Voegele def. Heather Watson 6-4 2-6 6-4

Standard good news/bad news: Heather Watson is back in action, but she’s out of the event. This costs Watson her Top Fifty spot — and just possibly might put Stefanie Voegele in.

Singles – Second Round: .(1) Serena Williams def. Caroline Garcia 6-1 6-2

There isn’t much to say except that Serena pads her unassailable lead in the contest for #1.

Singles – Second Round: (4) Agnieszka Radwanska def. Mallory Burdette 6-3 6-2

Maybe Agnieszka Radwanska is right: Her shoulder is getting better. This is her best result in weeks. Of course, playing opponents who aren’t Top Fifty and who don’t like clay helps…. Mallory Burdette ought to rise above #70 even with the loss.

Singles – Second Round: (5) Sara Errani def. Yulia Putintseva 6-1 6-1

Sara Errani again looks strong — but she is still only #7 in safe points, and could still fall lower.

Singles – Second Round: (8) Angelique Kerber def. Jana Cepelova 6-2 6-2

With Petra Kvitova struggling so much, there is a pretty good chance that Angelique Kerber will return to #7, or even #6, but it isn’t certain yet. She leaves Jana Cepelova a little below #60.

Singles – Second Round: Bojana Jovanovski def. (10) Caroline Wozniacki 7-6(7-2) 6-3

To say that Bojana Jovanovski has Caroline Wozniacki’s number is probably not a very good description; right now, everyone has Wozniacki’s number. But Jovanovski has been singularly well-placed to take advantage. Jovanovski is now assured a Top Forty spot. Wozniacki will very possibly stay Top Ten, but not for much .longer if this keeps up.

Singles – Second Round: (14) Ana Ivanovic def. Mathilde Johansson 6-2 6-2

It would appear Ana Ivanovic has solved whatever was bothering her in the first round. She has defended her points, but it’s still not absolutely certain that she will stay in the Top Fifteen.

Singles – Second Round: (15) Roberta Vinci def. Galina Voskoboeva 6-4 4-6 6-2

This moves Roberta Vinci past Nadia Petrova, meaning she might rise as high as #11.

Singles – Second Round: Petra Cetkovska def. (19) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-5 2-6 6-4

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova seems to have something of a masochistic streak. She seems to enjoy playing tough matches like this — and, because they’re so tough, she loses a lot of them. And she made the third round last year. This means she will be losing her Top Twenty ranking.

Singles – Second Round: (20) Carla Suarez Navarro def. Shelby Rogers 3-6 6-4 6-4

Carla Suarez Navarro defends her points, but it’s not yet clear if she can stay Top Twenty.

Singles – Second Round: (26) Sorana Cirstea def. Johanna Larsson 6-1 6-4

Sorana Cirstea now looks very likely to hit the Top 25. But probably not much higher, because she faces Serena next.

Singles – Second Round: (29) Varvara Lepchenko def. Elina Svitolina 7-6(7-5) 6-1

Varvara Lepchenko still needs one more win to defend her points, but we’d say she has clinched her Top Thirty spot.

Singles – Second Round: (32) Sabine Lisicki def. Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 6-4 6-0

No question now; Sabine Lisicki is Top Thirty.

Singles – Second Round: Dinah Pfizenmaier def. Urszula Radwanska 6-3 6-3

Urszula Radwanska has never made the third round at a Slam, but one suspects that this is mostly about the fact that Urszula would have had to face sister Agnieszka had she won. Because she loses some Challenger points, she will probably fall below #40. (Unless she plays another Challenger.)

Singles – Second Round: Monica Puig def. Madison Keys 6-4 7-6(7-2)

Had Madison Keys won this, she would have clinched a Top Fifty spot. She still has a chance, but it’s going to be a very close thing.

Singles – Second Round: Svetlana Kuznetsova def. Magdalena Rybarikova 1-6 6-2 6-2

Svetlana Kuznetsova almost had her Standard Third Round Meltdown early, but she managed to survive, meaning she needs only one more win to defend her points. And she plays Jovanovski next.

Singles – Second Round: Virginie Razzano def. Zuzana Kucova 4-6 6-2 6-0

It was a fine story, but it was a short story. Zuzana Kucova still plans to retire. But she can at least say that she had a Slam win before going.

Doubles – First Round: (3) Petrova/Srebotnik def. Grandin/Uhlirova 6-3 6-0

This could have been a pretty tough opening match, but obviously Petrova/Srebotnik wanted none of that. Nadia Petrova has a theoretical chance at the #1 ranking here (although it is extremely unlikely in practice); Katarina Srebotnik has a good shot at a Top Five position.

Doubles – First Round: (4) Makarova/Vesnina def. Burdette/Stephens 6-1 6-3

Makarova and Vesnina both lost early in singles. It looks as if they want to make up for that.

Doubles – First Round: Schiavone/Stosur def. (5) Huber/Martinez Sanchez 6-1 6-3

We don’t know whether Liezel Huber or Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez is the problem here — they’ve both struggled this year — but they are definitely a mess. Huber wasn’t defending anything that mattered, but Martinez Sanchez was a semifinalist last year; it appears she will be losing her Top Twenty spot. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) ERRANI ………….8455*

1..(1) VINCI …………. 8455*

3..(3) PETROVA ……….. 6895*

4..(4) HLAVACKOVA ………6640*

8..(9) VESNINA ……….. 4817*

9.(11) RAYMOND ……….. 4775*

10.(12) HUBER …………. 4425

Doubles – First Round: (9) Groenefeld/Peschke def. Bertens/Maria 6-4 6-4

Anna-Lena Groenefeld defends her points, which will keep her around #20; Kveta Peschke still needs more.

Doubles – First Round: Jankovic/Lucic-Baroni def. (16) Hantuchova/Medina Garrigues 6-4 3-6 6-2

Jankovic/Lucic-Baroni seem to be much better as a doubles team than the sum of their parts. Of course, some of this may be Daniela Hantuchova’s dislike of clay.

Doubles – First Round: Beltrame/Thorpe def. Martic/Scheepers 3-6 6-4 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Coin/Parmentier def. Craybas/Oprandi 7-5 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Date-Krumm/Parra Santonja def. McHale/Paszek 6-4 6-3

Doubles – First Round: King/Niculescu def. Birnerova/Voegele 2-6 7-5 6-2

Doubles – First Round: Zhang/Zheng def. Babos/Minella 6-7(5-7) 6-4 6-3
