Rafael Nadal admitted he is amazing himself, having now reached the final of all seven tournaments since returning from a seven months lay-off because of knee problems and after another title at the Mutua Madrid Open, he has now won five of them.

The 11 times Grand Slam champion made quick work of Stanislas Wawrinka in Sunday’s Madrid final at the Caja Magica, needing just an hour and 11 minutes to overcome the Swiss, 6-2, 6-4 and so win the Spanish capital’s trophy for a third time.

Maybe this win is even more special given where I have come back from,” the 26-year-old said. “Playing in Madrid is always very exciting for me and the tournament couldn’t have worked out better.”

Sunday’s final came two weeks before Nadal begins the defense of his French Open title, in the climax to the clay-court season.

Nadal added: “I’m here and next week I will be in Rome and I will be thinking about Rome. I won’t be thinking Roland Garros.

“When it comes we will think about Roland Garros, which is a pretty important tournament, of course, but it’s not the only one in the world.

“If you told me four months ago all this would have happened and I wasn’t going to do well in Roland Garros I would tell you, yes, I will sign [for] that with my eyes closed.”

Wawrinka could only marvel at Nadal’s dominance. “Rafa showed again that he is the best on clay,” said the Swiss who was complimentary to Nadal’s back up team for their diligence and expertise during their player’s comeback.

“Since he has come back he has shown that it is really tough to beat him.”
