Singles – Final: (1) Serena Williams def. (2) Maria Sharapova 6-1 6-4

It might give a little perspective to note that, until Maria Sharapova faced Ana Ivanovic in the semifinal, the Russian had not faced a Top Thirty player here. So her clay form was perhaps not all that her start would have implied. Still, she came in with a 21 match clay winning streak — and got blown out. Whew!

Serena Williams is still undefeated on clay this year, and now has a 17 match winning streak (Miami, Charleston, Madrid). She also won Brisbane, and is 29-2 (with a withdrawal) this year. We show her with 4061 points already in 2013 (to 4165 for Sharapova, who has two titles, two finals, and two semifinals; and 3400 to Azarenka). How much more can Serena do this year? Your guess is frankly as good as ours, but it’s likely to be a lot — especially since, for practical purposes, she is now assured the #1 Roland Garros seed.

This is listed as career singles title #50 for Serena.
