Tennis the sport of a lifetime ! Yes it’s that and more. For many of us it’s a passion. For many of us it’s a lifelong passion and love of the game to the point of feeling almost nerdish. Tennis why do we all love you so much ? I wish I knew it would save me lots of money and heartache and headache. Ok throw in the bad knees the aching back the neck that creaks and the hands that are all bent up. Oh, I forgot the hips and the skin cancers but there’s nothing like hitting that ball. Or watching the shots that today’s players execute with ease. The equipment has improved. But mostly the level of the players fitness is beyond imaginable. Oh Harry Hopman would have been a happy man. He so stressed fitness. He was so ahead of his time. In Harry’s days as coach of the Aussie Davis cup he had such depth that he help develop that he had enough top players to field five teams that would have all brought the hardware home.
Sorry I digressed. But I have been too busy to write lately. We acquired another tennis website and have been growing at a rate that’s hard to get hold of. Thank Deb for bugging me to pencil a short Lob. Hard to imagine our “10sWhenever Newsletter ” next issue will be the 100 th newsletter that’s in it’s final editing . And mostly thank Richard Evans for the great piece he wrote on E.L.Scott aka Gene Scott. Gene was tennis elegant Gatsby . Handsome. Charming. Elegant. Brilliant. Wealthy. Cocky. Confident. Did I say Handsome ? Witty….you get it.
When I asked Richard to write about Gene he seemed excited but frustrated….. how do you break such a complex person into one story? Being the World Class Tennis Writer he pulled it off. Thank you Richard. It’s a beautiful tribute. Gene Scott was my mentor. He asked me to work the Kremlin Cup but I turned him down. I thought going to Russia wasn’t a great idea. I was scared of Russia and Russians and they felt the same way about us. I realize all these years later that Sasson Khakshouri , Boris Yeltzin and Gene Scott used tennis to change the world !!! Yes. Totally true. That tournament in Russia changed everything. Tennis gave us all common ground. Thru Our love for tennis we found peace. Thru that event the Russian tennis movement took off and the women never looked back. The men players have been awesome as well there just haven’t been as many at the top. Sorry Marat but you never reached your potential. Now Kafelnikov was a different story. The guy played more weeks than anybody and always gave his all. I digressed again. The bottom line. Play Tennis. Play tennis. Play tennis.
