Singles – Second Round: Ekaterina Makarova def. (3) Victoria Azarenka 1-6 6-2 6-3

Victoria Azarenka was really playing three opponents here. One was Ekaterina Makarova — a tough customer anyway, especially when one is rusty. Azarenka’s second opponent was her injury and lack of practice. But the worst may have been her own temper. Azarenka was leading in the third set, but got into a fight with the umpire, and it was all downhill from there. She will keep the #3 ranking, but the #2 Roland Garros seed now looks almost certainly out of reach. Makarova has merely defended her points, but her Top 25 spot now looks sure.

Singles – Third Round: Daniela Hantuchova def. (8) Petra Kvitova 2-6 6-2 6-3

And once again Petra Kvitova fizzles out. She will stay at #8, but a rather weakened #8. Luckily for her, the players behind her are also out, so she can still expect the #8 Roland Garros seed.

Singles – Second Round: (13) Maria Kirilenko def. Kristina Mladenovic 6-7(5-7) 6-1 6-4

Maria Kirilenko hasn’t moved yet, but one more win would likely take her to #11. Kristina Mladenovic loses her chance to hit the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: Kaia Kanepi def. Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3 6-1

This would seem to indicate that Kaia Kanepi really is back. Finally. She is now closer to #40 than #50. Carla Suarez Navarro loses her chance to hit the Top Twenty.

Singles – Second Round: Varvara Lepchenko def. Julia Goerges walkover

Is there a Law of Conservation of Germans? With Angelique Kerber and Sabine Lisicki through, Julia Goerges was doomed…. She loses her Top 25 chance. Varvara Lepchenko needs one more win to stay Top Thirty.

Singles – Third Round: (6) Angelique Kerber def. Svetlana Kuznetsova 3-6 6-4 7-5

And here we go again: Svetlana Kuznetsova just can’t seem to last long at an event. She remains about a hundred points shy of Roland Garros seeding. Angelique Kerber is now two wins away from passing Li Na to take the #5 ranking.

Singles – Third Round: (16) Ana Ivanovic def. Laura Robson 5-7 6-2 7-6(7-5)

There seems to be a rule that one of the evening matches here must go long. Ana Ivanovic looked too passive in the first set (and heard about it from her coach). In the third, she dug herself another hole — then came out of it and served for the match at 6-5. Only to be broken. She survived — and will probably hit the Top Fifteen as a result — but she’s lucky she gets a day off….

Doubles – Second Round: Kuznetsova/Pennetta def. (1) Hlavackova/Hradecka 6-2 6-4

Maybe Errani/Vinci were right to skip this event. Few of the other seeded doubles teams did anything right….

Doubles – Second Round: Husarova/Lisicki def. (2) Petrova/Srebotnik 7-5 5-7 10-6

The strangest thing is, we not only lost our top two seeded pairs, we lost both on a surface they generally like!

Doubles – Second Round: (3) Makarova/Vesnina def. Chan/Govortsova 6-3 6-3

Elena Vesnina retired from her singles match. Amazing that she and Makarova were the top seeded doubles winners.

Doubles – Second Round: Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova def. (5) Mattek-Sands/Mirza 7-5 6-1

This is our one upset that isn’t a huge surprise; the surface isn’t a favorite for Mattek-Sands/Mirza.

Doubles – Second Round: Soler-Espinosa/Suarez Navarro def. Dekmeijere/Kalashnikova 7-6(7-2) 6-4 .
