Munich

Singles – Semifinal: (3) T Haas def. I Dodig 6-4 6-3

This was the day’s first singles match, and it resulted in the defeat of the last non-German. Tommy Haas rises to #13, and gets one more chance to win this event that he has never managed to win.

Singles – Semifinal: (4) P Kohlschreiber def. D Brands 6-7(4-7) 6-3 7-6(7-5)

You (well, OK, we) have to like a tennis player who is willing to be seen wearing glasses — and, yes, the official photo of Daniel Brands shows him wearing spectacles. But his eyes blinked just once in the final tiebreak of this, and so he will remain still outside the Top Fifty. Philipp Kohlschreiber is now one win away from defending his title — which, incidentally, would put him in the Top Twenty — but for the moment, he’s still at #22.

Doubles – Semifinal: Baghdatis/Butorac def. Cabal/Farah 7-6(7-3) 1-6 10-7 …

Oeiras

Singles – Semifinal: (1) D Ferrer def. (3) A Seppi 6-1 6-4

With this match, it looks as if David Ferrer is finally, truly, back to being right. Unfortunately for last year’s champion Andreas Seppi, who will fall from #18 to no better than #20, and it will be #21 if Kohlschreiber wins Munich.

Singles – Semifinal: (2) S Wawrinka def. (Q) P Carreno-Busta 6-3 3-6 6-1

After this week, we have to think we’ll be seeing more of Pablo Carreno-Busta. But probably not for a while; even with all the points he earned here, he remains below #150. That’s about ten times the ranking of Stanislas Wawrinka, who will rise to #15 if he can win the title here.

Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Qureshi/Rojer def. (4) Bracciali/Fognini 6-4 4-6 10-6
