Miami

Singles – First Round Garbine Muguruza def. Katerina Siniakova 6-2 3-6 6-4

Merely making her first WTA main draw is fairly big for Katerina Siniakova, who came in ranked #821 and needed a wildcard into qualifying. She more than doubles her points, and should rise to around #640.

Singles – First Round Karolina Pliskova def. Lucie Hradecka 6-2 6-1

Lucie Hradecka remains below the Top Fifty — but Karolina Pliskova may well hit another career high, probably about ten places above her current #92.

Singles – First Round Urszula Radwanska def. Annika Beck 6-3 6-1

Urszula Radwanska is getting close to the Top Thirty, although we’d guess this won’t quite be enough to get her there.

Singles – First Round Svetlana Kuznetsova def. Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-3 6-3

Two more wins would probably put Svetlana Kuznetsova back above #40.

Singles – First Round Romina Oprandi def. Arantxa Rus 6-4 3-6 6-3

Romina Oprandi didn’t play last year, so any and all points here are bonuses.

Singles – First Round Simona Halep def. Sabine Lisicki 6-2 3-6 7-5

Sabine Lisicki made the fourth round last year, so this drops her to no better than #40; she is likely to end up lower.

Singles – First Round Daniela Hantuchova def. Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2 6-4

Hard to believe that the rankings make this an upset, but they do. And Tsvetana Pironkova made the second round last year. She will be falling out of the Top Fifty.

Singles – First Round Stefanie Voegele def. Petra Martic 6-3 6-3

This is starting to look like the best year of Stefanie Voegele’s career. She should rise above #70.

Singles – First Round Jamie Hampton def. Monica Niculescu 6-4 6-3

Jamie Hampton continues to climb — and costs Monica Niculescu the chance to clinch a Top Fifty spot.

Singles – First Round Olga Govortsova def. Melinda Czink 3-6 6-3 6-2

This will drop Melinda Czink out of the Top Hundred.

Singles – First Round Magdalena Rybarikova def. Mallory Burdette 6-2 6-4

Magdalena Rybarikova assures that she will stay Top Fifty.

Singles – First Round Victoria Duval def. Andrea Hlavackova 7-6(7-4) 6-4

Andrea Hlavackova loses a few points and will probably fall below #70. Victoria Duval increases her points by almost half; she will rise from #376 to probably a little above #300.

Singles – First Round Laura Robson def. Camila Giorgi 6-2 4-6 6-3

Laura Robson had a horrible time finishing this off, but if she can win one more match, she will pass Heather Watson to become Britain’s #1. She might hit the Top Forty as well.
