Roger Federer’s plan for a brief holiday followed by an intensive training block at home in Switzerland appears to be on track despite a quarter-final loss at the Indian Wells Masters. The world No. 2 confirmed that he will stick with his program even if it means being away from the ATP for almost two months.

Federer is due to return to the courts during the clay season at the Madrid Masters, which begins in early May. While he said that nothing is written in stone, he does foresee following the previously planned schedule.

“Normally I’d like to practice real hard and rest up and recover from this week,” he said before leaving California. “It’s been a really difficult week for me, so I’m happy to have played a decent tournament.

“Overall under the circumstances (back pain) I’m happy. It’s all right, and I’m looking forward I’ll probably maintain my schedule, but you never know. I always say I will discuss with my team what the schedule is after here once the tournament is over, and I haven’t had time to talk about it yet.”
