Holder Victoria Azarenka is feeling well off her best form as the top seed struggles to maintain her unbeaten 2013 season as she deals with a head cold and a bad ankle which has bothered her for weeks.

She managed to go through in to the quarter-finals with a defeat of Ursula Radwanska 6-3, 6-1. It was pretty obvious that I wasn’t feeling that well”,”said the Melbourne and Doha winner. “My ankle’s been bothering for a while, so it hasn’t been really getting better. But on the bright side I won the match. I could overcome those things and take these chances in the important moments and really go for my shots. I had to make that happen, not to wait for her mistake.”

2006 champion and second seed Maria Sharapova struggled in the first set but gathered her forces for a 7-5, 6-0 defeat of Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino. “I was maybe going for the lines a little bit more than I had to, especially in the first few games when you don’t know too much about your opponent or haven’t played her,” Sharapova said.

“Towards the end of the first and beginning of the second set I really stepped it up, was being more aggressive, and really gave myself a better margin than I did throughout the first set.”

Russian Maria Kirilenko upset Agnieska Radwanska 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 while 2011 Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova, seeded fifth, beat fellow Czech Klara Zakopalova 6-2, 6-3. French Open finalist Sara Errani upset France’s Marion Bartoli 6-3, 6-2.
