Feliciano Lopez is making good initial progress on his return to tennis from injury, reaching the quarter-finals in Memphis after opponent Tommy Haas fell ill and could not contest their second-round match.

The Spaniard who has been dealing with a wrist problems is hoping to mark the start of a return to form over the next week on North American hardcourts. Lopez did his initial training in Madrid at the Caja Magica, home of the May Madrid Masters.

“I’m feeling good, I’ve been training for about a week and a half now,” he told the tournament website. ” When I got back from Australia (second-round loss) I decided to take a break because I had been carrying a wrist injury for a while.

“I’ve had it looked at and have been working on it and truth be told it is still causing me some problems, but it is a lot better now.”

He said that the plan calls for testing his wrist after Memphis in Delray Beach, and the two cement Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami, next month. “Then I’ll get the clay season underway.

“I’d like to finish the year in the top 20 again. I think that is an attainable objective for me to have, and given the circumstances and my age, if I managed to do that, it would be a great year,”said the No. 47.
