Greetings. Updates from everywhere. It was a Davis cup week. Friends of 10sballs.com are all over the world. Let’s start with Austin Karosi. He won a tourney in Malaysia. His dad Zsolt is a great guy and runs the best Tennis program out of Singapore.
We saw American Davis cup on Tennis Channel . Thank you tennis god Steve Bellamy. The crowds are skimpy. How sad. This is American Davis cup with the Bryan brothers and John Isner and Sam ? This is sad. USTA you get the ” double fault ” from us again. Why not Bus juniors in for free. Fill the seats. Grow the sport !!!!!
Our Belgian buddies lost to our Serbian buddies. The Serbs are so solid. Congrats to all for the efforts…. See you in Boise.
We hear that Davis cup history is being made ….playing the longest doubles Davis cup match in history. They are currently in their 7 th hour ?
Ok. Now I’ve seen it all. A tweener on a net cord at the net from Marcelo Melo (dramatic ) a Tweener on the volley. AmazeBalls. I guess you need to be like 6’8 ” to pull that off. Wow. It’s a dubs match between Brasil and the USA.( Jacksonville was a poor choice or were ticket prices too high ?) The Twins lost. That doesn’t happen much in Davis Cup.
Lets move onto Monte Carlo. The beautiful club developed by Gloria Butlers father. Ok. We are thinking about it. Sven was just there. Lucky guy …
Back to the Bryan brothers. It’s amazing. Just a week ago they winning the Auzzie open. That’s a tough turn around. Adjusting back from OZ.TIME. Wow.
Tennis Channel tv commentating team of James Blake and Ashley Fisher are awesome. David Egdes one of my heroes in tennis made a great dubs team with those two. Bravo David.
We keep hearing about all the outpouring of LOVE that Jackie Cooper of La Quinta California received last Sunday. Local tennis royalty turned out. Including southern California’s rising star Taylor Fritz. The son of Kathy May Fritz( Hall of Famer) and Guy Fritz. Kathy was a top tenner. She still is… Hello USTA why isn’t Kathy invited to the senior US Open anymore ? Her father the late David May was such a wonderful tennis patron. He loved the sport. He could talk tennis with anyone about anything. He was a lifelong student of the game. He loved it all. Ok. I got distracted. Back to Jackie. ( Kathy ,guy, and Taylor attended ) as I said back to Jackie. The guy is the combo of Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer, James Dean and Justin Bieber . As handsome as Jackie is , he is truly that sweet. The friends that came to say hello / goodbye were somewhere between 600-800 individuals who all know how blessed they were to know the truly great guy. We love you too Jackie .
Hey Bob and Mike how come it doesn’t say USA on the back of your shirts.? ? I’d like it. Maybe it’s a little detail? Maybe it’s a big one ?
March fourth. UCLA. Pauley pavilion. One night exo in Los Angeles. Thanks to Justin the supersonic jet Gimelstob. if you can be in the Los Angeles area on that night you will see an amazing event. You will see James Blake playing Mardy Fish. You’ll see a doubles with Pete Sampras and Nole. Yes that Nole. IDEMoooo Nole. The one. The number one player on the ATP tour. The one and only Novak Djokovic. Yup. That’s all that’s been announced already. Hurry buy your tickets. Look for BIG ad on our homepage. Big congrats to Justin Gimelstob. !!!
We close with a sad day. It’s the 20th anniversary since Arthur Ashe went to the Big Grasscourt in the Sky. Today an online auction house sold 400 items from his estate. Up for auction were items like trophies from UCLA , USLTA, SCTA ,Davis cup , West Point , and many more personal items including an Emmy that fetched over 5 grand. It was priceless but worth five times that. a bathrobe or two and passports , and silver and crystal and … It was just a sad ending for a man that was so personal in life. He was elegant. He was a gentleman. A UCLA grad. A West Point grad.A Grand Slam winner. A former world number one. A man who could zoom thru the entire New York times crossword faster than most people could do their first word. Daily ! He was a king. He was a god. He marched in the south for equal rights wearing a white brimmed hat that said NAACP…. That was for sale too. He lived big. He loved life. He got a bad deal. A bum ticker.a heart surgery. A bad transfusion ( Before blood was tested for diseases ,and anyone could sell a pint of blood) Arthur got aids. Yup. From a simple blood transfusion. How sad. But he played five sets of life jammed into three breakers. Arthur played pro tennis. But the money was very little back in the day. Arthur was a man of honor. He was a man with integrity. I don’t think he would like 2013 when a cable tv station named the learning channel has a tv show called honey boo boo. What can one learn from honey boo boo ?
