Paris

Singles – First Round: (6) Lucie Safarova (WC) def. Lourdes Dominguez Lino 2-6 6-1 6-1

Lucie Safarova needs a title to go anywhere in the rankings, so this is a pretty scary start. She leaves Lourdes Dominguez Lino right around #50.

Singles – First Round: Magdalena Rybarikova def. Virginie Razzano 6-4 3-6 6-3

Apparently not even being in France could revive Virginie Razzano for very long. She will remain below #150.

Singles – First Round: Kiki Bertens def. Tamira Paszek 6-4 7-5

This week was a chance for Tamira Paszek reach the Top 25, but this means she won’t rise above #27; there is still a chance she might fall.

Singles – First Round: Yanina Wickmayer def. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-6(9-7) 4-6 6-3

This, at least, is good news for Paszek, because Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova won’t pass her. Pavlyuchenkova will probably stay at #28; one more win might take Yanina Wickmayer to #20.

Singles – Second Round: (2) Petra Kvitova def. Stefanie Voegele (Q) 7-6(7-5) 6-3

Petra Kvitova seems to be saving all her best results for the smaller events — which makes it tough to move. She needs a final here to add to her total.

Singles – Second Round: (3) Marion Bartoli def. Christina McHale 7-5 6-1

Granting that this is a very tough draw, it looks as if Christina McHale’s slump is still plaguing her. She will remain a little below the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: Mona Barthel def. (5) Roberta Vinci 4-6 6-1 6-3

Maybe jet lag finally caught up with Roberta Vinci after all. She loses her (rather faint) Top Fifteen chance. Mona Barthel should gain about two ranking spots, but she remains below the Top Forty.

Doubles – First Round: Dolonc/Husarova def. (3) Goerges/Niculescu 6-2 2-6 11-9

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Errani/Vinci def. Coin/Parmentier 4-6 6-2 11-9

More evidence that Roberta Vinci wasn’t quite right. No word on why, though.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova def. (4) Peschke/Rosolska 6-2 6-3

Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova seem to be turning into a very solid doubles team; it would be interesting to see where they would end up if they played more regularly. As it is, they will probably have to live with being dangerous floaters at most of their events.

Pattaya City

No, they still haven’t finished the first round. All play was rained out on Wednesday, so they will have to complete the three remaining first round matches (involving Ivanovic, Vesnina, and Hantuchova) on Thursday, then play the second round.

It’s going to be a very long day….
