Bernard Tomic is back at the top of his country’s tennis just in time for the start of the Australian Open thanks to a quic-change of attitude.

A 21-place rise in the rankings marks a turnaround of huge proportions for the 2012 bad boy who was left off the Davis Cup team by captain Patrick Rafter for a bad attitude in ATP play last autumn.

At the time, the then-teenager admitted that he was barely trying in some of his post-US Open matches.

But after winning all three of his matches at the Hopman Cup in Perth and following up with his first career title at the weekend in Sydney, Tomic is suddenly flavour of the month for the home fans.

Tomic now stand 43rd on the computer, surpassing Marinko Matosevic, who held the position for a few months as Tomic slumped.

Tomic’s youthful enthusiasm has already shown through as he looks forward to a potential third-round Open match with four-time champion Roger Federer. The Swiss, more than a decade older than the Aussie, warned that the practise of perusing the “what-ifs” of the draw can be dangerous.

That doesn’t bother Tomic: “Best-of-five is always difficult. You don’t know how your body can pull up, but I think I’m pretty fit.

“I played five straight matches in Sydney. I had no problem after the tournament, so I feel physically fine. I’ll be ready for five sets any day of the week.”
