Sydney

Singles – Second Round: (1) Agnieszka Radwanska def. Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-4 6-3

Six straight wins for Agnieszka Radwanska this year. And for those six wins, he has added exactly 80 points to her point total. At this rate, to earn the equivalent of the difference between winning and losing a Slam final, she would have to play fifteen straight events….

Singles – Second Round: (2) Angelique Kerber def. Galina Voskoboeva 6-2 7-5

Last year, Angelique Kerber was playing in Hobart. Consider this a token of the progress she has made.

Singles – Second Round: (3) Sara Errani def. Maria Kirilenko 6-1 6-1

Maria Kirilenko wasn’t likely to climb anyway, but she perhaps wanted a little more Australian Open preparation; she was one of the few players who didn’t play last week.

Singles – Second Round: (4) Na Li def. Ayumi Morita 6-1 6-0

Seven straight wins for Li Na. This heat trick of hers seems to be working well.

Singles – Second Round: Svetlana Kuznetsova def. (7) Caroline Wozniacki 7-6(7-4) 1-6 6-2

If you want us to tell you whether this is a good omen for Svetlana Kuznetsova or bad for Caroline Wozniacki… we can’t. But Kuznetsova can definitely use the points!

Singles – Second Round: Madison Keys def. Jie Zheng 6-0 6-4

A very disappointing start to the year for Zheng Jie, but a nice one for Madison Keys, who is on the brink of the Top Hundred.

Singles – Second Round: Dominika Cibulkova def. Ekaterina Makarova 7-6(7-3) 1-6 7-6(7-1)

It appears Ekaterina Makarova will stay Top Twenty, but by a slim margin.

Singles – Second Round: Roberta Vinci def. Jelena Jankovic 3-6 6-4 7-6(7-4)

There will be no return to the Top Twenty for Jelena Jankovic.

Doubles – First Round: Groenefeld/Peschke def. Llagostera Vives/Zheng 4-6 6-4 10-2

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Jurak/Marosi def. (3) Kirilenko/Raymond 6-4 6-2

Kirilenko/Raymond don’t seem like a particularly strong team (Kirilenko won’t come to net enough to suit Raymond, and neither one can really put away a ball from the baseline), but this plus the singles result still makes us wonder if Kirilenko is fully fit.

Hobart

Singles – First Round: (3) Klara Zakopalova def. Timea Babos 6-4 6-3

Klara Zakopalova couldn’t win her final last week — but, this week, she’s the top seed left in the Hobart field; maybe her odds are better here.

Singles – First Round: Bojana Jovanovski def. Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 6-0 7-6(9-7)

Torro-Flor took the draw spot vacated when Anabel Medina Garrigues withdrew due to the injury she suffered in Hopman Cup. It doesn’t seem to have done her much good.

Singles – Second Round: Lauren Davis def. (2) Sorana Cirstea 6-1 6-3

We had thought Sorana Cirstea was over her problems of last week. But maybe not.

Singles – Second Round: Elena Vesnina def. (4) Yaroslava Shvedova 4-6 6-2 6-1

More evidence that Elena Vesnina is back in her best form. She could be one of the more dangerous floaters in the Melbourne draw.

Singles – Second Round: (8) Sloane Stephens def. Simona Halep 6-4 6-0

We’re guessing this will take Sloane Stephens another spot or two up the rankings. At this rate, we just might have four Americans in the Top 25 by the end of the month.

Singles – Second Round: (9) Mona Barthel def. Chanelle Scheepers 7-6(7-3) 7-5

Mona Barthel continues to play tough matches, but so far, she is defending her points. And she is one of only three seeds left here, and she is the only player in the top half to be through to the quarterfinal, so she’ll have an extra day’s rest.

Doubles – First Round: (2) Gajdosova/Zakopalova def. Cornet/Klepac 6-3 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Arruabarrena-Vecino/Dominguez Lino def. Jones/Marino 4-6 6-4 10-5

Doubles – First Round: Babos/Minella def. Soler-Espinosa/Suarez Navarro 3-6 7-6(9-7) 10-8
