Andrea Petkovic will not be able to continue in the Hopman Cup mixed team tournament after injuring her right knee during her first match. Her Australian Open is also over before it begins, as the 126th-ranked German tweeted details of her condition.

“So it’s a rupture of the meniscus, back to Germany as soon as possible for an arthroscopy. Relieved it wasn’t the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) again.”

She will be replaced by compatriot NO. 113 Tatjana Malek, allowing Germany to continue in the competition.

Tommy Haas will now find himself on court at the round-robin event alongside the 25-year-old ranked 113, who wil be arriving from Miami. She is one of the few Germans not already in the southern hemisphere and competing in a tournament.

Petkovic, who spent much of 2012 dealing with back and knee problems, was in tears as she had to quit the opening tie against Australia after beating Ashleigh Barty in the opening set 6-4.

Hopman officials said that they are now actively seeking a German replacement to join Tommy Haas on the squad at the eight-nation event, “But the good news is that doctors don’t think her injury is too serious,” said an official.

“Her withdrawal is very disappointing for her and us. We are looking now for a replacement (who needs to be a German.),”
