St. Petersburg

Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) M Youzhny def. (7) G Garcia-Lopez 6-4 0-6 6-3
Although Mikhail Youzhny has now started to add points, this isn’t enough to really improve his ranking. A title would probably make him Top 25.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) M Klizan def. R Berankis 6-3 6-2
Unlike Youzhny, Martin Klizan is climbing fast; this should move him into the Top Forty.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (4) F Fognini def. R Bautista-Agut 6-4 7-6(7-1)
Fabio Fognini is in the Top Fifty, and his chances of going higher look pretty good, because his next opponent is:

Singles – Quarterfinal: D Gimeno-Traver def. F Cipolla 6-2 7-5
A small upset; Daniel Gimeno-Traver came here at #93, twelve spots below Cipolla. Hard to believe he’ll be much challenge to Fognini, though.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Moser/Skupski def. Kubot/Youzhny 6-3 7-6(7-4)

Metz

Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) J Tsonga def. J Levine 6-3 6-4
Still nothing that matters for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. On the other hand, he’s the only one of the top four seeds left here. So his odds for a title look pretty good. And that would count — a little.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (7) G Monfils def. (2) P Kohlschreiber 6-7(3-7) 6-4 6-4
Philipp Kohlschreiber really should have played Davis Cup, as it turned out. Here, he earned no points that counted. Davis Cup wouldn’t have been worth much, either (the points for playoff wins are small) — but they’re 500 point event points…. Kohlschreiber should stay at #18. Gael Monfils, unfortunately, needs one more win before the points start counting.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (5) A Seppi def. (4) F Mayer 7-5 6-2
Florian Mayer was defending champion’s points (from Bucharest), so this costs him substantially — he’ll fall from #25 to probably #29. Who will take his spot in the Top 25? It just might be Andreas Seppi — he’s up to #26 in safe points.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (8) (WC) N Davydenko def. I Karlovic 6-7(5-7) 7-6(8-6) 6-0
Talk about coming up just short for Ivo Karlovic, who had a match point in this contest! And he needed these points. But then, so did Nikolay Davydenko, who is very close to #45 as a result of this win.

Doubles – Semifinal: (4) Brunstrom/Nielsen def. Malisse/Waske 7-6(7-5) 7-6(7-5)
