Andy Murray may be basking in the glow of his first Grand Slam title after winning the US Open, but that doesn’t mean the new world No. 3 considers that he’s had the best season on the ATP.

For one thing, there are more than two months of competition, including the Masters 1000 in Shanghai in a month, an event he won during an autumn surge last season. In addition, there is the key event in Roger Federer’s hometown of Basel plus the Paris Bercy Masters and the year-end championships in London, where Murray will be the home crowd hero.

“I don’t think I have had the best year on the tour, no. I think the last few months have been great for me, but, you know, there is more to the tennis tour than just the Grand Slams,” said Murray after overcoming Novak Djokovic in five sets in New York.

“Novak has played great tennis in most of the Masters Series, as well. Roger has got himself back to No. 1. It’s important to remember the tennis season – it starts in January, finishes in November. There are four Slams, but there are also many other tournaments to get to No. 1 in the world – if you are No. 1 you deserve to be the player of the year.”

That honor looks likely to go to Federer, whose six titles in 2012 lead the list. The Swiss is fast approaching his 300th career week atop the ATP points table.
