U. S. Open

Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) Victoria Azarenka def. (7) Samantha Stosur 6-1 4-6 7-6(7-5)

It was fitting that such an important match should be so close. It was fortunate that it was scheduled early, because there was a rain delay of more than an hour, and more rain followed the match’s completion.

For Victoria Azarenka, this clinched the #1 ranking; Maria Sharapova can no longer catch her. But for Stosur, the defending champion; it was obviously a blow. She falls from #7 to #9, and Marion Bartoli still has the chance to pass her. Bartoli was up 4-0 on Sharapova in a match that was (eventually) called off due to rain; they will play the rest of their quarterfinal on Wednesday.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Errani/Vinci def. (11) Goerges/Peschke 6-2 7-6(7-2)

Errani and Vinci had already clinched the top rankings, but obviously they weren’t going to rest on their laurels. This gives them more than a 500 point cushion over Huber/Raymond; they look almost sure to be the year-end #1 team. Kveta Peschke loses the chance to return to the Top Ten; the best she can hope for is #11.
