Ave Maria! - Reporting on Maria Sharapova's Match

Maria was simply too good.  She hit 37 winners in 17 games.  In the first set, she doubled 4 times, but she only lost 7 points on her serve including 2 of Sara Errani’s winners.  She had just one error on serve in the first set.  Then in the second set when her detractors were looking for the serve to break down, she had just one double fault.  In the tough 12 point last game of the match, as Sara tried to claw her way back into the match, making two brilliant drop shots, Maria came up with two aces and two great second serves to finish off the match.

Give Maria credit.  She really played as beautifully as her song.  Ave Maria!

Here are the charts for the first and second set:

10sChiro’s Post US Open Performance Measure Points Breakdown

By reaching the semis at Roland Garros, Federer insured he will maintain the lead in the race to the Post US Open ranking.  He had a 1745 point lead going into the French and loses 480 or 1280 points to the runner-up and winner of tomorrow’s final.  But he will still have a nearly 500 point lead heading into the grass court season.  He needs at least a final at Wimbledon.  He’ll probably need at least one win at Wimbledon or Flushing Meadows.
