The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), the global leader in women’s professional sport, announced that its Top 10 Rankings for the week of May 21, 2012, will feature ten players from ten different countries for the second time in history. The historic achievement first took place during the 2011 season (week of January 31).

“It’s remarkable how many countries today are producing world class women’s tennis players. It is great for the popularity of the game in so many national markets around the world, and is something that makes women’s tennis unique as a sport,” said Russia’s three-time major winner Maria Sharapova.

The WTA Top 10 Rankings for week of May 21, 2012 are as follows:

Victoria Azarenka (Belarus)

Maria Sharapova (Russia)

Agnieszka Radwanska (Poland)

Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic)

Serena Williams (United States of America)

Samantha Stosur (Australia)

Li Na (China)

Marion Bartoli (France)

Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark)

Angelique Kerber (Germany)

Making her first appearance in the Top 10, Angelique Kerber leads a group of three players from Germany in the Top 15, which includes Andrea Petkovic and Sabine Lisicki.

The current Top 10 have won 12 of 13 Premier-level and Grand Slam events this year. Serena Williams has made a strong come back after sitting out most of the 2011 season injured, and is 17-0 on clay this year with titles at the Family Circle Cup (Charleston) and the Mutua Madrid Open (Madrid).
