Newsletter, Vol. 74 – Men and Women in Estoril

1 May 2012

This weeks a very busy one with three men’s tournaments and two women’s going on. For tennis fans in Estoril, Portugal they have the opportunity to see both men and women players compete on the courts. The tournaments are already full of upsets such as Mikhail Elgin and Denis Istomin’s knock out of the No.2 seeds Eric Butorac and Bruno Soares in Estoril. Marcos Baghdaits took his first clay court win in Munich at the BMW Open after beating Tobias Kamke. The No.2 women’s seed, Ksenia Pervak, is still in the game in Budapest unlike several of the other seeded players, barely skimming a win over Vera Dushevina. Maria Kirilenko played her first match this week after returning to the top 20 at the Estoril Open where she overcame Elena Baltacha in her first round win. If you like our newsletter then please remember to forward it to your most likeable tennis loving friends.

Local Knowledge 4 – Goran the Wild

Unless a player is British, there is no assured place for them in the hearts of Wimbledon fans. Some are welcomed into the adoring bosom of the crowd for their glorious exploits, some due to their on-court personalities, but the most dear of all are the valiant losers. Goran Ivanisevic hits all three, and as a result he’s adored by 10sBalls.com and indeed fans all over the world. A beaten finalist in 1992, 1994 and 1998; he went into near-on public meltdown but came back in 2001 – unfancied, unseeded and only in the tournament by way of a wildcard – and he finally won his Grand Slam. The Good News: The Dawn of “The Isner Era”

I’ve been a little quiet the last couple of weeks trying to get my papers in order and my taxes filed. Well I managed to get it done a whole day early (but it just about killed me.) I’ve been dying to put up some comments about a couple of things that have become apparent the last couple of weeks. There’s some good news and then there is some bad news. Let’s start with the good news. It’s still not apparent for the world how significant this development is, but for men’s professional tennis in the USA, we have begun a new age, The Isner Era. So, from May 4th we enter a new era for tennis. The Madrid Masters tournament will take place on blue coloured clay – and not everyone is happy about it. Tournament director Ion Tiriac – a former player and manager is not afraid of a little controversy. As a player in the 60s he stood out amongst his fellow pros – a man with a very tight grip on his image, as a manager he liked to control his players, working with fellow firebrands Boris Becker and Goran Ivanisevic, and now as a tournament owner he still has his own views and sticks to them vehemently.

So what’s the problem with blue clay? And what’s the need for it? [Read More]
