Newsletter, Vol. 69 – The Beginnings of Monte Carlo

18 April 2012

The matches on the red clay courts of Monte Carlo are well underway and Nadal is already looking to capture the title for the eighth time, after beating Jarkko Nieminen today. Novak Djokovic is also starting strong which means we’re sure to see plenty of victories from the No.1 Serb. The top two are on opposite sides of the draw so the only way we’ll see a matchup between the two is in the finals. Rafa the king of clay will undoubtedly make it there and is probably ecstatic to be playing the first masters tournament played on clay this year where he definitely has the advantage. We’re still waiting on the ladies action to begin in Germany. And as always faithful readers please forward our newsletter to your faithful tennis friends and spread the news.

The Good News: The Dawn of “The Isner Era”

I’ve been a little quiet the last couple of weeks trying to get my papers in order and my taxes filed. Well I managed to get it done a whole day early (but it just about killed me.) I’ve been dying to put up some comments about a couple of things that have become apparent the last couple of weeks. There’s some good news and then there is some bad news.
Let’s start with the good news. It’s still not apparent for the world how significant this development is, but for men’s professional tennis in the USA, we have begun a new age, The Isner Era. If you look at Lou Fuller’s article on Greg Sharko and check out the listing of the country winning the most ATP titles since 1973, it is amazing to see how dominant the US men were for so many years. Early rounds of the ATP 1000 Monte Carlo event are underway and it is a beautiful sight to see the world’s best players return to the red clay. The acrobatics, tricks, and brutality of clay make it the most entertaining to watch and learn from. It’s the great equalizer as serves are slowed down and rallies last longer. You also get guys who seem to come out of the woodwork and only show up to clay events, journeymen players that love the battles on European clay and rarely travel to tournaments on other surfaces. Take a guy like Fabio Fognini as an example: A supremely talented Italian player that seems to be coasting while out on tour, yet he gets good results during clay events that keep him inside the top 100! Greg Sharko Walking Media Guide

by: Lou Fuller
Greg Sharko is officially the Director of Media Information. That is so perfect. It describes him , a little. Greg is the heart And soul of the ATP. He has been a guardian of the game for as long as we can remember. Gregs passion for the sport of tennis is un matched. He is a walking encyclopedia. He remembers players birthdays and kids and parents and coaches and hack writers. Ask us. We know. Greg goes back with Geezer so long they can’t remember…10sballs.com is applauding Greg (editor in chief ) for dedicating the 2012 media guide to former top tenner Jim Mc Manus. Jim passed away in 2011 and was a founding father of the current ATP tour. [Read More]

Svens Blog – Caroline Wozniacki, Miami, Amsterdam

Miami turned out to be a very busy tournament with the distribution and having Caroline reach the semi finals I was spending most of my time between practice courts and courtside watching the matches.
I had one day off in 6 weeks because when I came back to Amsterdam I had several meetings on working on a new project with the city of Amsterdam and team meetings with Adidas plus I spend time with the Academy players and coach’s. [Read More]
