Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) R Nadal def. (6) J Tsonga 6-2 5-7 6-4

When Rafael Nadal broke first game out in the opening set, it looked as if it would be a short night. It didn’t turn out that way; this took more than two and three-quarter hours. But the final result was that Jo-Wilfried Tsonga came up just short. Twice. Once in the match, and once in the rankings. David Ferrer will keep the #5 spot, and Tsonga will have to settle for staying #6.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (4) A Murray def. (9) J Tipsarevic 4-6 6-3 6-4

If Andy Murray needed extra practice, he certainly got it in this more than two and a half hour match! It’s a good thing he gets a day off — he had to come back from a set and a break down, and needed help from the trainer. The worst of it is, he’s still at #4. Janko Tipsarevic won’t know until tomorrow where he stands — if Mardy Fish can make it back to the semifinal, then Fish will be #8 and Tipsarevic will stay at #9. If Fish loses to Juan Monaco, then Tipsarevic will rise to #8.

The worst of it was, Tipsarevic was still scheduled to play doubles after this. A very long day indeed….

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Mirnyi/Nestor def. Kubot/Tipsarevic 6-1 6-4

The outcome would probably have been the same even had Janko Tipsarevic been rested. As it is, it wasn’t much of a match. But it keeps Mirnyi/Nestor relatively close to the Bryans. Here is how we currently estimate the Top Six:

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (7) Paes/Stepanek def. Marrero/Verdasco 7-6(8-6) 6-4

Paes/Stepanek continue to make their case that they are the best team of the year — but Leander Paes is still only #7 in the rankings, and Radek Stepanek even lower. Count them as one team that wouldn’t like two year rankings!
