While Caroline Wozniacki clings to the WTA No. 1 ranking by a thread, five other rivals are in hot pursuit as the Australian Open begins. The Dane who has yet to lift a Grand Slam title needs to advance into the second week of the major to have a chance of retaining her spot.

But that doesn’t bother Petra Kvitova, Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova, Samantha Stosur and Agnieszka Radwanska, who could all be in with a chance depending on results as the major at Melbourne Park unfolds.

No. 2 Kvitova is the most promising candidate, having come close last week in Sydney after Wozniacki suffered a wrist injury. Had Kvitova won that title she would have entered this week on top of the table.

But the stress-free Czech is not outwardly worried by such matters. The reigning Wimbledon winner says that she never even dreamed of accomplishing what she has so far. “When I started to play tennis, I didn’t think I would be a professional tennis player.

“So for me to win Wimbledon, the year-end Championships, Fed Cup, it wasn’t my dream. But it’s very nice. If I maybe can be No. 1, it will be very nice, too, of course.

“It’s all really strange for me,” she said of her new fame. “I’m already get used to (it). I mean, it’s the part of our life. We have to live with this.”
