NA LI ET SAMANTHA STOSUR À MONTRÉAL EN 2012

La Chinoise Na Li, 5e mondiale, et l’Australienne Samantha Stosur, 6e meilleure raquette du monde, ont toutes les deux confirmé leur présence à la Coupe Rogers présentée par Banque Nationale qui sera disputée du 4 au 13 août 2012, au Stade Uniprix, à Montréal.
« Sept des dix meilleures joueuses du monde sont maintenant inscrites à notre tournoi et ce sont sept des athletes les plus populaires du circuit », mentionnait Eugène Lapierre, directeur de la Coupe Rogers. « En 2011, Na Li et Samantha Stosur sont sorties de l’ombre en remportant un premier titre en tournois du Grand Chelem et nous nous attendons à ce qu’elles brillent encore au cours de la prochaine saison. »
Li, grande vedette de sa Chine natale, a été propulsée vers le sommet du tennis féminin après avoir conquis les grands honneurs de son premier Grand Chelem à l’âge de 29 ans, à Roland-Garros, au mois de juin. En janvier, elle avait également participé à la finale des Internationaux d’Australie. Li a atteint le troisième tour de la Coupe Rogers lors de trois de ses quatre présences.
« Chaque année, Montréal organise un magnifique tournoi et j’y suis toujours bien reçue », commentait Li.
En septembre dernier, Stosur a surpris la grande famille du tennis en battant Serena Williams pour remporter les Internationaux des États-Unis, son premier trophée en tournois du Grand Chelem. En 2010, elle avait aussi pris part à la finale de Roland-Garros. L’Australienne a parcouru beaucoup de chemin après avoir souffert de la maladie de Lyme en 2007 et 2008. Finaliste à Toronto l’été dernier, Stosur effectuera sa première visite à Montréal.
« Il est difficile de croire que ce sera ma première participation à Montréal. J’ai vraiment hâte, car je n’entends que des commentaires positifs sur la ville et sur le tournoi », confiait Stosur. « Après avoir atteint la finale l’an dernier à Toronto, j’espère pouvoir franchir une étape de plus et mettre la main sur le trophée en 2012. »
Grâce à l’ajout de Li et de Stosur à la liste des participantes de la Coupe Rogers, Montréal pourra compter sur la présence de sept des dix meilleures joueuses du monde. Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova, Vera Zvonareva et Marion Bartoli avaient déjà confirmé leur participation un peu plus tôt.
Pour la première fois de l’histoire du tournoi, les matchs du tableau principal de l’édition 2012 de la Coupe Rogers commenceront le mardi 7 août et la finale sera disputée à 19 h, le lundi 13 août.

Reigning French Open and U.S. Open champions confirm their participation
World No. 5 Na Li of China and world no. 6 Samantha Stosur of Australia have both
confirmed their participation in the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank, which will be held from August 4-13, 2012 at Uniprix Stadium in Montreal.
“We now have seven of the Top 10 players in the world entered in our tournament and they are also seven of the most popular players on Tour,” said Rogers Cup tournament director Eugène Lapierre. “Both Na Li and Samantha made a name for themselves by winning their first Grand Slam title in 2011 and we expect more of the same from them during the upcoming season.”
Li, a superstar in her native China, propelled herself to the top of the women’s game when she won her maiden Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros in June at the age of 29. She also reached the final of the Australian Open in January. Li has advanced to the third round in three of her four appearances at the Rogers Cup.
“The organizers in Montreal put on a great tournament every year and I always feel welcome when I go,” said Li.
Stosur shocked the tennis world in September when she defeated Serena Williams to win the U.S. Open, her first Major crown. She also reached the French Open final in 2010. The Aussie has come a long way after a bout with Lyme disease during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Stosur finished as the runner up in Toronto last summer and will be making her first visit to Montreal.
“It is hard to believe that this will be my first time playing in Montreal. I have heard nothing but good things about the city and the tournament, so I am anxious to get there,” commented Stosur. “I had a great run to the final last year in Toronto and I hope to give myself another shot at the title in 2012.”
The addition of Li and Stosur to the Rogers Cup player roster for next August means that seven of the Top 10 players in the world have confirmed they are coming to Montreal. Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova, Vera Zvonareva and Marion Bartoli are also on the entry list.
In 2012, for the first time in tournament history, main draw play at the Rogers Cup will begin on Tuesday August 7 with the singles final scheduled for Monday August 13 at 7 p.m. in the evening.
