The Annual Year End ATP Tour Final Roger Federer Special

The ATP TOUR finale concluded with the two hottest players. And rightly so.

Some of our other big names faded badly in the closing weeks. Most of us speculated Novak Djokovic would finish the season the way he started it.or that Andy Murray would grab the the biggest other tournament on home spoil. Neither happened. Even Rafael Nadal disappointed in what has been a disappointing five months since his French Open crown. Certainly for these immortals their respective aura’s of invincibility are showing cracks.

The whole ATP tournament was dominated by the seeds outside the top three. Ferrer was good. Tipsarevic and Berdych, winners of tournaments since the U.S. Open, impressive. Credit should be given to finalist Tsonga who could be on the verge of cracking the top five. His big hitting game mixed in nicely with deft volley’s is a delight to behold.

But enough of them. This year ending London event turned out to be the Annual Year End ATP Tour Final Roger Federer Special with statistics that only Jimmy Connors wouldn’t find jaw dropping.

As usual the old Swiss maestro added to the history books winning his sixth year end title. His throwback game as usual faultless. He played in his 100th final winning his 70th tour title. Winning, it seems, doesn’t get boring. Federer added to his Swiss and Paris Indoor titles and perhaps more worrying to the rest of the field than anything is the seventeen match winning streak he will carry over to 2012. Is that a sign of an impending seventeenth grand slam title?

Bring on Australia 2012. We are waiting.

I go for a pale grey suit, white shirt and my best tie. Sunday best – to the church of tennis where the great prophet Roger Federer will be turning Tsonga into toast later this day (I hope).

Tom’s Tournament Diary – Final Day, Part Two

Wow – what a game, what a night! Federer went beyond them all and clinched a record sixth ATP World tour finals win. Simply outstanding. History in the making, and a real privilege to watch. There’s 17,000 people who can tell everyone that they were there that night.

Tsonga fought really well, a worthy finalist. He made many new fans tonight, winning over the neutrals with his attitude and application – and BOY has he got some power. Even when he’s airborne it’s like he’s got roots. Carved from solid oak.
