$721,000/Premier

Hard/Outdoors

Results – Sunday, July 31, 2011

Singles – Final

Final Facts

– Williams wins her 38th WTA singles title, and the first since her almost year long absence from the game. The 29-year-old American is now 38-14 in WTA finals.

– Playing just the third tournament of her comeback (after Eastbourne and Wimbledon), Williams was ranked No.169; as a result of her triumph she is projected to return to the Top 80.

– With her win, former world No.1 Williams passes the $33 million career prize money mark.

– Bartoli, who beat Venus Williams for the Stanford title in 2009 and was runner-up to Aleksandra Wozniak in 2008, moves to 6-9 in WTA finals.

– Bartoli had beaten S.Williams in the fourth round at 2011 Wimbledon; in today’s final she led 4-2 and served for the first set at 5-4, before Williams reeled off eight games in a row.

– Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko win their third title together (all Premiers – Cincinnati last summer and Madrid earlier this year). Azarenka now has six WTA doubles titles, Kirilenko 10.

Final Quotes

Serena Williams, 2011 Bank of the West Classic singles champion:

“There are still shots I’m not going for and not making that I know I can make once I get more confident and more match play. I’ll be able to make those. It’s encouraging to me that I can do more, I can do better.”

Victoria Azarenka, 2011 Bank of the West Classic doubles champion:

“Last year I was able to win the singles title here at the Bank of the West Classic last year and now doubles. We had a great week and look forward to playing again with Maria.”

Maria Kirilenko, 2011 Bank of the West Classic doubles champion:

“First, I want to wish Victoria a happy birthday. She is a great doubles partner. We had a great week at the tournament and hope we can come back and win this title again.”
