Two Panchos. No. Not those two Panchos…. These two Panchos! Both named Francisco… But nicknamed Pancho.
Pancho from 10sballs.com meets the World famous Pancho Segura.
Pancho is the best tennis player that holds the least titles in the record books. Why. Because of amateur tennis and pro tennis….
Guys like Pancho. Who by the way just celebrated his 90th birthday! Big congrats dear friend. Back to the story. Tennis players that came along prior to “Open Tennis.”Had a rough existence. If you turned pro to try and make a living to support yourself or family you couldn’t play at Wimbledon or Forest Hills – home of the old US Open. You couldn’t play Australia…. you couldn’t play almost anywhere except for a small tour. And for Pancho. You couldn’t play the “red, red, red clay” of Roland Garros and that means the French Open. Most of the geezers and those who knew the era feel Pancho might have held a dozen French opens… or slams.
Pancho was born on June 20 1921. In Guayaquill Equador. At 18 Pancho left home to attend the University of Miami. In 1943, 1944 and in 1945 he won three straight inter collegiate championships. Only 5’6″ inches tall and bowed legged from rickets as a child Pancho could move around the court soooo fast. Yet, he was also quiet. Gussy Moran refers to her old friend by the name of “sneaky.” He could sneak up to the net…. and all around the court… Pancho was the first guy with a two fisted forehand.
Do I sound like a fan?… Yes!… A Huge fan of the man. Big Boss and Pancho go way back…. So Pancho here at 10sballs.com always hears about Panchos. He hears about “Little Pancho.” And of course…”Big Pancho” – referring to The late Pancho Gonzales.
Personally I think. Big Pancho. Real name : Richard Alonzo Gonzalez was the best player… till Roger Federer came along….(roger is the greatest of all time)
Have to run. I’m in a doubles in thirty minutes. Oops. We used to call them foursome.
We highly recommend reading up on “Little Pancho.” There’s a great little book out there. Written by Caroline Seebohm. It’s a great read.
10sballs.com ‘s Pancho had a meeting and moment he will never forget. We love you Pancho ! And we have to mention. Lorne. You are the best buddy tennis ever had…..
