Queens Club Overview... and other Thoughts

Queens Club – it’s still on my mind. Whether the tourney windscreens are blue or red or purple… If I had to list ten of the best tennis clubs ever in the world it would make the TOP Twenty… Ok, it would not make the top 10.

Today at Queens… Doesn’t that have a nice ring… add a Pimms and wow… Ok, back to work. This just in:

RESULTS: Rafael Nadal took out an Auzzie qualifier (Ebden) with a pair of 4’s.

Stepanek beat Ljubicic in three sets. 0-6,7-5,6-4 .

Del Potro beat Igor the Kunitsyn with a pair of 4’s.

Nalbandian beat Bozoljac.

Donald Young Jr. (“D.Y.” to 10sballs.com) lost to Big Kevin Anderson 6-2,6-4.

Cilic beat Clement with a pair of 4’s. Clement had fought his way thru qualies. What an awesome player! First time Geezer spotted him was at Roehampton for Wimbledon Qualies back in 1996…

Ah, 1996, what a year at Wimbledon. The Mighty Richard Krajicek won the golden trophy… Oh sorry, got carried away…

Andy Murray (“Braveheart”) beat up on our buddy (“X-Man”) Xavier Malisse of Belguim and gave him a tough win/match. Scores were 6-3,5-7,6-3… Good luck Andy! Better luck in dubs dear “X!”

Queens: there are some great next round matches: Verdasco/Nalbandian. Anderson/Roddick. Murray/Tipsarevic. Nadal/Stepanek. Llodra /Tsonga.

Queens Dubs: the Bryan Brothers who feel as if Queens is a “Home Court ” (thanks to Elena) have a tough match. They play the “floaters”of Huss / Fisher. Malisse and Skupski of Great Britain beat up on the Murray brothers while Mahesh Bhupathu and Leander Paes are seeded third. They play a British team of Fleming/Hutchins. Max the Beast Mirnyi and his partner Daniel Nestor play Lipsky /Ram.

Queens – The qualies: Its a tennis nerd thing… I need to take a peak. The cut-off to enter the qualies was Cox- #539 in the world? Wow… Weak qualies. Sorry guys but true. Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of great players, including Big Chris Guccione and Nicolas Monroe. But, the week after French, four challengers had cut offs just out of 200. Maybe the “Federer-take-a-break” is contagious. The number 8 seed is #199 in world? – Fritz Wolmarans. Ok, its a Qualies. But a qualies for Queens…

The only way to describe this U.S. open is soaking wet without raining... It's really hard to play tennis when your socks are soaking wet and you are "sloshing" in your shoes. Your shoes get really heavy when they get wet.
