Its black history month! … Althea Gibson sings! (Dot label). Did you think our brief mention of Arthur Ashe was it….. Let’s talk a little about Althea Gibson. I mentioned her the other day. I think of her daily. I think of the color barriers that she broke. Escorted into Wimbledon by her dearest friend Alice Marble. I think of Althea so much because she was my female idol. Men. That’s easy. Pancho Gonzales. But female it was Althea. We spoke from time to time at events. She was a lifelong fan and friend to tennis. It was in her DNA. I mentioned her album. I found a copy in Amsterdam. She had a great voice. She chose some great songs. “Dream a little dream of me” and “I can’t give you anything but love” or a great oldie… “Once in awhile.” It was said that her love of music was almost equal to that of tennis (she was also great at golf). My guess is this album was recorded in the mid to late fifties. Her autobiography was called “I always wanted to be somebody.” She was and then some….. Greatest of the century.
Three big guys and Ashley Fisher. Ashley is a suit that also wears a warm up suit….. (on the ATP board) The doubles match in Memphis… Teams were Sam Querrey at 6’6. And John Isner at 6’9. Versus Ashley and Kevin Anderson, 6’7. We love doubles. We hope it stays as an equal sport on the ATP World Tour. We hate the “no ad” scoring. We are not fans of a tiebreaker for a third set. I think that the father of the tie break wouldn’t even like it. I remember the first US Open with the “sudden death…” In it’s first event it was so new to our one hundred year old sport (in America) that each time a match had a breaker a red flag literally went up on the umpire stand and everyone came running to see the results… My last statement on the subject. I’d guess Jimmy (James) van Allen would be proud his concept became a reality (tie breakers). But never to replace a set….
