Ticket packages are on sale for the 2011 Mercury Insurance Open presented by Tri-City Medical Center, which will feature two-time defending US Open champion Kim Clijsters (KLEYE-sters) of Belgium. The women’s professional tennis event takes place July 30 through August 7, 2011 at the La Costa Resort and Spa.

The Mercury Insurance Open ticket packages are being sold during a special holiday ticket promotion and offers tennis fans discounted prices. The promotion, which offers packages starting at $70, will run through Jan. 15, 2011. Individual tickets go on sale on May, 16, 2011.

“We are very happy to offer tennis fans this special holiday ticket promotion,” said Raquel Giscafre, Mercury Insurance Open tournament director. “With an expanded 56-player draw and the return of Kim Clijsters to La Costa for the first time since 2006, we strongly encourage fans to take advantage of this ticket promotion.”

Fans can go to mercuryinsuranceopen.com or call (760) 930-7032 for ticket information.

Clijsters will be making her seventh career appearance at the La Costa Resort and Spa at the 2011 Mercury Insurance Open. She reached the singles final in 2003, losing to fellow Belgian Justine Henin, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, and in 2006, falling to Russia’s Maria Sharapova, 7-5, 7-5.

“We believe the Mercury Insurance Open is one the best, most exciting tournaments in the world and we are very excited to welcome Kim Clijsters to the 2011 field,” said Erik Thompson, advertising director for Mercury Insurance. “Next year’s tournament promises to be even better and we look forward to an outstanding week of tennis and competition.”

In addition to reaching the singles quarterfinals in 2002 and 2005, Clijsters captured the doubles championship here in 2003 when she teamed with Ai Sugiyama of Japan to defeat Americans Lindsay Davenport and Lisa Raymond in the final, 6-4, 7-5.

Since turning professional in 1997, Clijsters has won 40 career singles titles, including three US Open Championships. This year, she captured five singles titles and defended her US Open title in New York. The Belgian finished 2010 by defeating Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark to win the WTAChampionships in Doha and ended the year ranked No. 3 in the world.

The Mercury Insurance Open, a Premier 700 Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) event offering $721,000 in prize money, will feature a 56-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw in 2011. The women’s professional tennis event returned to the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad in 2010 after a two-year hiatus.  Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova won the singles title this past summer when she defeated Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland in the final.
