Murray is Still Looking for a Coach

Andy Murray maintains he is still on the lookout for a top flight coach despite stunning former world no.1 Roger Federer with a sensational performance to win last week’s Shanghai Rolex Masters title with only friend Dani Vallverdu his lone advisor.

Murray picked up the 16th title of his career with the 6-3,6-2 win over Federer in the Qi Zhong Stadium that gives him an impressive 8-5 lead in all matches against the Swiss.

“Dani’s helped,” said Murray of his former class-mate at the Casal-Sanchez Academy in Barcelona who once represented Venezuela in the Davis Cup and moved as high as 727 in the world at singles and 746 at doubles in 2005. “But I still feel I want to have somebody around me that can really help me. Not all the time, but at certain periods of the year. The situation is basically still the same as it was before the U.S. Open, I’m still looking.”

Vallverdu and Murray’s mother Judy, who was absent from Shanghai, have been the world no.4’s two main confidants since Miles Maclagan decided to stand down from the job in July. Alex Corretja has been retained as a consultant as is expected to arrive in London at the weekend to work with Murray in preparation for his title defence at Valencia but there is no suggestion of the former world no.2 becoming permanent coach.

“I just enjoy having Dani around,” said Murray. “He watched all of my matches in Shanghai as well as all of my opponents in their previous rounds. Just like my Mum, he is very good tactically and can spot players’ weaknesses.

“It’s not like he is disrespectful about other top players but he gives me confidence because he tells me things I do better than them.”
