MUSEUM QUALITY TROPHIES

1. Bill Tilden’s 1927 U.S. Championship Men’s Singles runner-up trophy.  He lost to Lacoste 11-9 6-3 11-9  $11,000

2. Bill Johnston’s 1916 U.S. National Lawn Tennis Association Men’s Singles Championship runner-up trophy.  He lost to R. Norris Williams 4-6 6-4   0-6 6-2 6-4.  There are very few Johnston items available  $11,000

3. The Lawn Tennis Association of Australia Anthony Wilding Memorial Trophy awarded for the Australian Men’s Singles Championship won by Fred Perry in 1934.  Perry beat the defending champion, Jack Crawford in 3 sets.  The trophy was named after Anthony Wilding who won 2 Australian Championships and 4 Wimbledon Championships.  He was killed during the 1st World War.  It is engraved: “The Lawn Tennis Association of Aralia Anthony Wilding Memorial Trophy, Australian Singles Championship 1934 Won by (Perry’s name was not added).”  It was on exhibition at the Wimbledon Museum for a number of years before Perry’s death, after which it was sold at auction by his family  $9500

4. 1896 Wimbledon Men’s Singles winner Harold Segerson Mahoney large salver (silver plate).  He beat Wilfred Baddeley 6-2 6-8 5-7 8-8 6-3.  The Wimbledon Museum has seen it and stated that he possibly purchased the salver with his 20 pound prize or that it could be from another tournament  $7000

5. 1883 Lenox Club Tennis Tournament doubles game trophy won by Dr. James Dwight & G.W. Beals.  The tournament began on September 4, 1883, just 2 years after the first U.S. Championships.  The tournament is written us in the October 1883 issue of the American Cricketeer Magazine.  In the final they beat Alexander Van Rensseleer & A.E. Newbold 6-4 4-6 6-2 7-5.  One of the earliest tournaments with one of the true pioneers of tennis in the U.S.  The trophy is an almost circular bottle-shape with rackets on each side  $3500

6. 1988 Mixed Doubles Championship trophy won by Zena Garrison & Sherwood Stewart (it was Garrison’s)  $2000

19TH & EARLY 20TH CENTURY TROPHIES

1. 1891 N.H.S.T.A. (New Hampshire State Tennis Association?) trophy, 1st Prize Ladies Singles, won by Miss Ella Nickerson.  Shape of a Greek goblet $125

2. December 1881 Calcutta Lawn Tennis Handicap tournament, won by R.H. Adams.  This trophy is from the earliest days of tournaments, 4 years after the first Wimbledon and the same year as the first U.S. Championships.  It is a 4 3/8 x 8 goblet with elaborate floral designs throughout.   $400

3. 1896 Elmwood Tennis Club Championship won by Raymond A. Bidwell who also won in 1895.  2-handled, 11 inch vase-shaped with engraved scene of a men’s singles match  $150

4. 1883 F&N L.T.C. (Far & Near) Tennis Tournament of Picked Men 2nd prize won by A. Van Rensselaer score 65 games out of a possible 72, very early trophy, just 2 years after the first U.S. Championships, extremely ornate covered, heavy, black metal bowl with monster-like animals and decoratiive relief  $400

5. 3 Germantown Cricket Club trophies from the 1905 Philadelphia Tennis Championship ladies doubles: both 1st prize trophies, one awarded to Phyllis Green and one to Marjorie C. Green.  They are identical except that the names are reversed.  Also included is the runners-up trophy won by Mira Herbert Rastell & Anna Elizabeth Wallace  $325

6. 1910 Beau Site Hotel, Cannes, France Championship Singles won by Marshall M. Howe, early Sterling Silver trophy from the French Riviera  $250

7. 2 Merion Cricket Club trophies: 1912 Men’s Doubles Championship won by Albert E. Kennedy & K.C. Kennedy; 1899 Merion Cricket Club Junior Tennis Tournament, a 6 inch elaborately florally embossed tankard, 2nd prize won by H.G. Pearce  $225

8. 3 East Coast trophies: 1910 Bar Harbor Handicap Singles won by Albert Gould Jennings Jr.; 1917 Berkshire Country Club Berks County Tennis Championships won by Dwight R. Meigs & Randoph Stauffner; 1912 Connecticut State Litchfield Lawn Club runner-up Vanderbilt B. Ward  $175

9. 2 older trophies: Unusual 1910 Linares Lawn Tennis Tournament (2 silver brushes in a leather case–case is damaged); 1916 Miami County Tennis Association singles championship won by John W. Landrep  $100

10. 3 95 year old trophies: 1914 Haileybury Tennis Tournament Ladies Singles runner-up Gladys G.Young; 1913 Hollis Field Club doubles won by W.F. Williams & F. Tilney; 1914 Homestead Tennis Tournament Mixed Doubles won by Marjorie T. Beard & Hunt T. Dickinson  $200

Rockwell & Philip G. Carlton (belonged to Rockwell who was from Andover, MA); 1911 Pelham Heights Tennis Club Married Couples Doubles, Columbus Day Tournament won by Isabel M. Deuscher & Theodore I. 13. 2 100 year old trophies: 1910 Tedesco Country Club (10 inch high tankard with tilt top) Men’s Doubles won by H.W. Forbes & W.F. Spalding; 1910 Triangular Tennis Tournament won (3 handled urn) by Samual F. Rockwell (who was from Andover, MA)  $150

14. Y.M.C.A. Open Tennis 1916 won by C.F. Leighton, a former captain of the U.S. Davis Cup team and 1910 University Club Handicap Singles runner-up (winner not given)  $75

a. Battle of Century is over–Wills versus Lenglen.  General view of the Wills-Lenglen match held at Cannes, France.  Miss Wills is seen in the          foreground serving to Suzanne, who defeated her after Helen had done her best.  Insert shows Miss Lenglen shaking hands with our own Helen Wills.  These are the first photos to arrive in America.  March 1, 1926.  $80

b. Helen Wills scores over Miss McKane at Forest Hills.  In one of the most remarkable tennis matches ever played by women Miss Helen Wills, champion of the United States defeated Miss Kathleen McKane, the outstanding player of Ireland.  The contest featured the concluding matches of the international competition for the Wightman Cup.  Photo shows Wills and McKane in action.  August 21, 1925   $40

c. Tilden defeats Johnston for National Tennis Title.  William T. Tilden of Philadelphia defeated William M. Johnston of California in a hard fought five set match for the National Singles Championship at Forest Hills.  It is the sixth consecutive time that Big Bill has won the National Title.  In photo is shown part of the enormous crowd that witnessed the match.  September 25, 1925  $75

Davis Cup goes to France for the first time in its history.  The Davis Cup passed from America to France when at Germantown, Pa., Henri Cochet defeated Bill Johnston in deciding and final match of the tourney.  Photo shows the French Team with the Davis Cup.  Left to right, Rene LaCoste (sic), Henri Cochet, Pierre Gillou, non-playing captain of the French team, Jacques Brugnon and Jean Borotra.  September 16, 1927  $75
