Weather further disrupted play on day three of the AEGON Classic at the Edgbaston Priory Club. Nine matches were still completed with Anne Keothavong making it through to the second round.

She came through her first round match against French player Pauline Parmentier 4-6 7-5 7-5. She will face Na Li in her second round match tomorrow.

After the match she said: “It was a tough match but I’m glad I got through it – a win is a win. She was serving great, and my first serve percentage was not as high as I would have liked.

“She had her chances but I stuck in there. My level picked up in the final set. Once I got a feel for the courts I got better and pushed through.”

Elena Baltacha retired feeling nauseous in the second set after being 6-1 down in the first. After her match she said:

“I was praying for another day of rain [although] I wasn’t too bad in the warm-up but at 2-1 I started to feel terrible. I thought to myself “hang in there”, but I started feeling worse and worse.

“What didn’t help was the nerves as well. I was just thinking “I don’t feel well, try and get what you can out of it” but it was really dragging me down…so it was best that I pulled out I think.

“My preparation for today was not perfect; I was in bed for two and a half days so now I want to rest and be fully fit.

“Obviously I want to be fully fit for the AEGON International and give it a really good pop.

“The illness is purely the heatstroke but if I’m not completely better over the next couple of days I will have a coupe of blood tests to be on the safe side”

Maria Sharapova played her first match at the AEGON Classic this year and was 4-0 up against American Bethanie Mattek-Sands on centre court before play was called off for the day.

Last year’s champion Magdalena Rybarikova is also through to the third round after her victory over Russian Ekaterina Makarova. She won in three sets 7-5 4-6 7-6 (5).

The doubles matches were all called off for the day.
