Starting off Day 3 was Madison Keys, playing on Arthur Ashe for the first time. Fair to say there were no nerves as she dominated Tereza Smitkova in the first set.
This lets Simona Halep defend her points -- and that means that she has also defended the #3 ranking. Petra Kvitova will remain stuck at #4. Yanina Wickmayer remains stuck below #65, but she seems finally to be coming back to life; her results here gained her more than a dozen ranking spots.

A similar fate befell Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova as the tenth seed was unable to continue at 5-5 against Russian cancer survivor Alisa Kleybanova.
Laura Robson’s chances of even starting the Australian Open have been thrown into doubt following the British no. 1 being forced to retire midway through her first match of the year at the Hobart International earlier today because of ongoing wrist problems.
Svetlana Kuznetsova made her first appearance in Portugal in 11 years, after a 2002 qualifying loss.
