The Mutua Madrid Open had it all on Wednesday. A marathon in a marquee women's matchup (Serena Williams saved three match points in a win over Victoria Azarenka), hometown dominance (five Spanish men advanced to the last 16, including upsets by Marcel Granollers and Fernando Verdasco), and a 3:00 a.m. finish (Andy Murray vs. Philipp Kohlschreiber).
Well now that all depends on your point of view really. In the red corner (we would say pink, but we’re not in the mood for stereotypes this evening!) we had Maria Sharapova weather a comeback from the feisty Caroline Garcia.
The ITF has announced the official team nominations for the 2015 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group semifinals, and World Group and World Group II play-offs taking place on 18-19 April.

Lucie Safarova, the 28-year-old Czech lefthander, took full advantage of a weary opponent to claim the 6th, and most important, title of a long career when she defeated Viktoria Azarenka 6-4, 6-3 in the final of the Qatar Total Open.
After a bizarre interruption that had the referee on court and both players unhappy, Victoria Azarenka continued her progress up the WTA rankings by reaching the semi-final of the Qatar Total Open

Well thank heavens for that chink in the clouds, a return to the norm … we don’t mind admitting we were properly exhausted after all the drama of Day Three at the Australian Open, and Day Four was a little happier. OK well maybe not for eighth seed Caroline Wozniacki.
